..... nor do I need to meet Mother Teresa to decide that she is someone I have plenty of respect for.
This aspiration would be most difficult for you, considering that she died in 1997.

I don't need to meet someone to decide what they are like. I will make my mind up from all available sources I have.

Talent alone does not make a player great.
Personality-wise Ronaldo is rotten. The world's greatest player? Yeah, right.
Deary me Suarez. Couldn't he have waited half an hour more if he fancied some Italian tonight?
Suarez needs a lifetime ban for that bite. He has previous.
As for England who cares any more? We're **** and always will be without fundamental reform
No amount of reform can get past the simple fact we don't have enough top drawer players.
We don't have one England player who could honestly be described as world class.
Gareth Bale is probably the only player from the UK that could be called world class.

Suarez is an animal, deserves nothing less than a life ban.
Suarez is an animal
I don't particularly like him but he probably has more talent than the whole of the England team combined.
Talent makes up about 99% of the reason a player is called great.
Famous footballers are supposed to be role models. I don't consider that very much what a role model should be doing.
I disagree, but clearly quite a few on here have different criteria to the ones I have. Some people may consider that on-pitch performances are the only factors, or the overwhelmingly main factors, to determine whether a player is great, I don't.
Present - Messi. His balance, vision and control are better than Ronaldo, although it's a slim margin. As a matter of interest who do you think is the greatest player, past and present ?

Past - Pelé, Cruyff, Maradona, Puskas, Di Stefano, Beckenbauer, Moore, Maldini would all be in with a shout as the greatest ever.
I neither care nor wish to know what Ronaldo may or may not do in his private life.
The only criteria on which a footballer should be judged is his ability on the field of play - and on that score in my opinion he is the best.

Messi is a fine player but I prefer Ronaldo because of his speed and athleticism and grace of movement. He's just a joy to watch.
From the past I would add Garrincha, Eusebio and possibly Best (though he never played on the world stage), although quite a few of them had off-field problems that made them "rotten" and therefore unworthy of the accolade according to the previous poster.
I keep hearing and reading that footballers are supposed to be 'role models'
