I wonder if the England football management have now learned any lessons from these two friendly matches that they did not already know in their onward planning for the next World Cup ?

Incidentally, in the Sweden v Portugal play-off match last night, the two really big names on view both scored, but whilst Ibrahimovic scored twice for Sweden, Ronaldo scored a hat-trick for Portugal.

The biggest match of last night was the replayed match between Colwyn Bay and Altrincham, which finished with Altrincham winning 2 - 0, with Greg Wilkinson and James Walshaw scoring. Which is exactly the way it was in the first attempt at the match on Saturday. Frank Sinclair was getting a lot of abuse in the match, as Alty fans blamed him for making the trip necessary.

I hope England have now realised that their best defender by a country mile retired from the national team back in September 2012 and that unless he comes back and they stop playing Kyle Walker when you have Glen Johnson and Micah Richards available they will be absolutely annihilated by the first decent opposition they encounter next summer. I hate to think what a full-strength Germany, Spain or Argentina would do to a backline of Hart, Baines, Walker, Cahill and Jagielka...

Shame that Sweden didn't make the World Cup. Ibrahimovic alongside Falcao and Suarez is probably the best striker in the world and it would have been great to see him in Brazil. Unfortunately they got dealt an awful hand with their group (whereas in all honesty Portugal should have won theirs), but that's the way it goes.

It does look like justice has been done in the result of this fixture, after the hiatus in the match that was called-off with only a few minutes to go in the first match.

Altrincham have played some notable non-league and FA Cup matches over the 50+ years whilst I have had an interest in football.

It did not take very long for those running Scunthorpe United to sack Brian Laws after this FA Cup loss to local non-league rivals Grimsby Town...:roll:

I'm struggling to understand the sacking of Brian Laws myself .... Yes, he wasn't the greatest tacticion in the world, but he made up for that by buying good players. Despite Scunthorpe being 12th in League 2, we're a lot closer to the top (only 5 points) than we are to the relegation places (10 points).

I think the main reason that Laws got the boot is that Peter Swann (the new chairman) wanted to prove to everyone he has got the balls to make the big decisions, but I think in this case he's wrong.

Oh, on Skybet, currently the leading candidate for the job is David O'Leary at 6/4, followed by former Scunthorpe player (and current Gainsborough manager) Steve Housham at 9/2

Quite a few of the potential managers on that list will probably not want the job IMO. Andy Crosby is at Reading with Nigel Adkins. Russ Wilcox has just seen up close and personal what's happened at the club. The club is too small for the likes of Paul Jewell, Gary Megson, Neil Warnock, Kevin Keegan, Stuart Pearce and Alan Curbishley, and Peter Beagrie has got his cushy Skysports pundit job.

10 Men Oldham won this afternoon with 1-0 scoreline against Gillingham and on loan player Mike Petrasso who only sign for Latics yesterday afternoon score winning goal we also had Kusunga sent off but aleast Latics hang on.

Probably surprise scoreline of day came in League One with Tranmere winning 5-1 to Coventry Tranmere were 4-0 up before they had player sent off but still score fifth goal in added time.

Everton and Liverpool draw 3-3 in they Merseyside derby with two goals in first 8 mins too.

IIRC, Grimsby striker Steve Livingstone (I think it was), suffered a bad head injury in a match quite a few years ago now, and because of the time needed to treat him and get him of the pitch, 14 or 15 minutes was added on to the half.

Nope it was not justified, there was no need for more than 4 minutes and that's pushing it.
Nobody at the match could work out why the ref did not blow for so long.

Edit: Turns out 2nd half was 57 minutes not 62. Watch was 5 minutes fast.

The media have completely ignored that Cardiff's equaliser came from a free kick that shouldn't have been, that the free kick was successfully defended by United on the first attempt but the referee inexplicably ordered it to be retaken after a Cardiff player (Medel) threw a punch at Fellaini (and wasn't sent off) and they scored from the second taking of it.

So with one decision that "probably" went in favour of United and three that went against them it's not surprising that it's the decision in favour of United that is making headlines while the three poor decisions that allowed Cardiff to equalised are totally ignored.

Had the Manchester City/QPR game on the final day of the 2011/12 season not been delayed, news that Bolton had lost and QPR were safe from relegation wouldn't have reached the QPR players with minutes still to play and they wouldn't have started celebrating and stopped trying and allowed Manchester City to score two goals in injury time and United would have won the title instead of losing on goal difference.

Had Nani not been wrongly sent off with United in the better position against Real Madrid last season United might have gone on to win the match and maybe the whole competition.

With seven consecutive league medals and a second Champions League medal Rooney would be a much happier and less frustrated individual and so none of today's events would have happened and he wouldn't have lashed out.

As an impartial party to the comments made in the postings above, the lack of a creative midfield player (or two) is something that will continue to haunt Manchester United until signings of the highest calibre midfield players are made.

I totally agree with you, as a Liverpool supporter that is a good thing for me though. Ha ha. Alex Ferguson was one of the greatest managers in the world ever though and got the best out of what he had. I felt for a while that Man U's midfield wasn't up to much, given time I'm sure Moyes will get the best out of it and they will of course make better signings. I don't think Fellaini was what was needed.
