When reading sacked (ive forgotten his name, looks like little britain character) it was said a club who has sacked their manager later than start of march has never stayed up. There are quite q few mid table managers unemployed at the moment, and Sunderlands statement sounds like they have someone lined up.

I'm aware of the difference, however what the churches need to do is realise they and their existence isn't viewed as the absolute truth and absolute power any more. It is petty little things like this that are driving people away from it and the sooner they realise that it makes them look like backward, Middle Age institutions the better it will be for themselves. There is absolutely no reason why there shouldn't be football today, it's just the churches dragging their heals because they've come to the grim realisation that they aren't the be all and end all any more.

Having said that, Easter strikes me as a Pagan event more than anything.

The Easter weekend in general, and Easter Sunday in particular is a religous holiday though, and not your run of the mill laze about the house Sunday.

I may be an atheist, but the vicar and the church do have a point here in my opinion.

I am most grateful for your input here, spoken as an atheist, but recognising the very specific points that you have stated in your posting, which seem not to have been fully understood by the other poster. Easter and Christmas are the only two main religious times of the Christian Church and surely that these two occasions are marked out of a sign of respect in a whole year does not seem too much to ask. The state does offer Bank Holidays as such times to the populace in general, not just for Christians.

Thanks for referring to me as 'the other poster' Paul, appreciated greatly, especially at this time which is allegedly all about respect etc. I can see absolutely where they are coming from, however I think it's a disgrace that the whole country should have to bow to it. Such outbursts to me just show how scared the church are about losing their power, a desperate attempt to claw back to the days when they were the ultimate overlords. Mercifully such days are gone now and we can move forward into being a modern, free, advanced civilisation not held back by Middle Age philosophy, some of which is utterly barbaric. Easter should be free to be celebrated by those who want to, but an entire nation of over 60,000,000 people (less that 3/4 is Christian) shouldn't have to basically stop because they want them too. In my opinion, it should be just like any other Sunday today, no exceptions, no changes, nothing.

Anyway, back to football...

Suarez decides to have an impromptu praying session, diving to the ground to pray. Referee, feeling particularly Christian, decides to gift a penalty

Coming from a Villa fan I understand you thinking it was a dive, however it was one of the most clear cut fouls I've seen Suarez become victim to in the penalty area!

To be fair, it was absolutely stonewall.

Regarding the Easter Sunday thing, to me and millions of others its just a normal Sunday. The vast majority of the UK do not follow nor believe in such faith these days, and the chruch do need to fast forward to the modern day, and allow us to treat it as a normal Sunday. I popped to my local convenience store (only place open in town today for any form of shopping, and I have never seen so many customers in the store.

With all due respect Paul, as someone who could not care less about religion, why should I be deprived of football today because a group of people that matter nothing to me tell me it is wrong?

Within the article, it was said....

The vicar, the Reverend Andy Jolley, said that Easter Sunday "should remain a special day for families."

Of which there will be many, many families at the match today enjoying themselves.

I think Tesco Metros are open today - I'm not sure what the other supermarkets or local stores are open to but they must be making on hell of a profit today.

I also notice that Celtic were playing today, isn't that area and it's supporters very religious, yet not a mention of it by the vicar?

Although Neil Lennon has made me chuckle...

"I'm not saying anything insulting, I just thought the referee had an appalling game."

Alan 'Pwemier League' Smith, co commentator on the Villa v Liverpool match is so far up the a**e of Suarez, Gerrard and the vastly over rated Carragher it's embarrassing
Sky's commentary team at the St Mirren v Celtic game (which ended 1-1) summed it up by saying 'the game was decided on bad refereeing decisions' Another point towards the 'inevitable' title though ;)

The talksport commentators were worse but what do you expect when Sky own it in all but name. At least BBC WM make their bias obvious

Full time ended Villa 1 Liverpool 2. Loads of comments on bbc feed that people expect Wigan vs Villa to be the decider, with no mention of Sunderland. Cant say I agree. I expect Wigan to be safe by then, I more expect Sunderland Villa game in round 35 to be the relegation decider.

Should Di Canio take charge at Sunderland as is fully expected now he is travelling up for talks, I think Sunderland may well be ok. He seems to be a fantastic motivator.

There are those who decry worshipping in a Christian Church, but have no problems in worshipping at the altars of Mammon, Sky, Premier League, Tesco, etc. All hail the great God of Capitalism, the new religion which has no boundaries of freedom for its adherents.

It was not I who first made a posting on this thread bringing the matter of religion onto a football-based thread. I wonder what the reason was for doing this in the first place, save to bring up a matter that could be a cause of something more than an off-thread debate on Easter Sunday ?

I doubt Di Canio will take the job unless he is certain he will have no interference from board or chairman. Not sure what Ellis Short is like for interfering. PDC definitely gets the players motivated and playing well.

As far as I'm concerned, anything that relies on 'astrology' (I honestly can't think of a better word for it), or any such series of events to signify a date rather than it being a set in stone date (e.g. 25 December) strikes me as something that does sound rather Pagan. That's with all due respect to Pagans of course!

Anyway, that's the end of it for me. Oh, and I raised it in the first place because oddly enough it's rather topical, like 98% of the content of this thread!

I'm with you on this Matt, as a festival to mark the resurrection date anniversary, why isnt it on a set date?

There is only one God and that's Paul McGrath

Rob Halford surely?

Anyway, this has gone way off topic

Back to football, well done to the Gers on winning the title yesterday, though it was disappointing it took so long and secondly, it only came through after another team lost. Still, here's to SD2 and a new challenge in August.

This is my final posting on this matter and only made in answer to the point of a set date query that was raised in your posting. The major Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha also changes each calendar year.

Anyone resident in the Blackburn area, which has a very large Muslim population, will be very well aware of this fact.

Football is pretty boring but can't be as boring as Church surely?

This betrays a certain lack of knowledge of the history of the last 2000 years.

I agree - in particular the decision of the Christian Church to adopt and/or take over the approximate dates of yule and eostre from other religions for festivals.

A bit like the Johnston's Paint Cup taking over the rituals of the Auto Windscreens Shield...

Are you "celebrating" Easter at all? Chocolate? Long weekend? And "deprived" of football? One day without a live match is going to hurt you in what way exactly? I actually think the vicar was going slightly over the top, but there is an awful lot of self-righteous piffle on the other side of the fence too (such as Christianity "taking over" the dates of pagan festivals - all religions festivals tend to happen at the relative same time because of what they are celebrating)
