MSN are calling the Seagulls' victory "another famous shock". Someone please enlighten me as to why it was such a "shock". If I had put a bet on this match there is no way in Hell that I would have bet on anything besides a Brighton win.

We were an absolute shambles.

Matt, you are to be commended upon your knowledge. Yes indeed, this match was a first round FA cup match and still keeps Hyde in the record books, albeit for the wrong reason..

To keep the same 1880's period in mind, there were indeed some rather amazing scorelines in cup matches. May I draw your attention to two matches in particular that occurred on 12th September 1885 in the first round of the Scottish Cup:-
Arbroath 36...Bon Accord 0
Dundee Harp 35...Aberdeen Rovers 0

Not a good day for the City of Aberdeen. There is very little trace of Aberdeen Rovers in the history books, whereas Bon Accord where said to have been invited by accident and were in reality a cricket club! One player in the 36-0 rout scored 13 goals - a joint world record...

Apparently Abroath also had five goals disallowed. That I didn't know

Incidentally, I was disappointed to see Hyde not doing the double over Stockport County over the festive season, having beaten them 2-0 at Edgeley Park. Perhaps the rise from the bottom of the Conference Premiership to 9th position as a result of their recent good run of results (including the 7-0 win over Woking) was too much to expect that would continue..:roll:

Forgive my non-responses to your PM over Christmas Paul (I honestly forgot ), but I did wish to commend Hyde's valiant form of late. Supposing it was to continue, I assume you would have to play at Edgeley Park should the impossible happen and you get promoted again? And speaking of the Conference, I note that Newport managed to lose 5-0 at home to Forest Green. A top class example of how to throw away a promotion push

If you read through this thread it should be very clear who I support, but just to run through it to remove all doubt (in order) - Rangers, Linfield, Blackburn Rovers and Accrington Stanley.

Anyone would think you weren't a fan of your hometown team

Hyde will have to realise that the Conference Premiership is not all "sweetness and light" and that they have to play with the same commitment at home, as they do away, as today's home 1-0 defeat by Forest Green Rovers follows the 1-0 home defeat by Stockport County.

Shades of what occurred at the Boundary Park matches of Oldham Athletic last season seem to be repeating themselves at Ewen Fields.

On a happier note...

Nottingham Forest 2...Oldham Athletic 3 was a good cup win away from home at a club high up in the Championship.

I referee rugby as previously mentioned, and I have only once had any obscene comments aimed at me, and I had an apology and a beer bought for me from the player in question after the match.
Only two things I can think of, is that either I am a superb referee who gets everything right, (which I doubt or I would have been promoted higher than the level I am refereeing), Or rugby players have far more respect to the referee.
My big question is why are rugby players more respectful to the referee?

without a doubt the respect for the refs is far higher. both in league and union.

Because most Rugby referees are not useless?

I understand your point, but would you say football refs are more useless?

We are encouraged to discuss decisions and talk with players after match. Football referees seem discouraged to discuss decisions. I'd definitly say we as rugby referees are far more open with players, supporters etc, which I think football can learn a lot from.

Surely the effects of that are potentially similar to Ashley Williams on van Persie? Vidic's was certainly deliberate too!

A deliberate unguarded strike to the back of the head from a few centimetres could have caused a potentially serious head injury and may have caused permanent damage that cannot be measured.

But yeah both are obviously exactly the same.

I'd estimated around 3 minutes. RVP goal was only around 40 seconds into injury time so irrelevant really.

It's remarkable that Vidic's kicking the ball away has been called by two people in this thread (including you) a deliberate attempt to injure West Ham fans but you reject that Ashley Williams' kick was deliberate, even if he admitted as much in a post match interview.

Perhaps your Yorkshire heritage will be somewhat upset by the first two league results this season by Trafford FC, as they were against two clubs from your side of the Pennines...An 8-0 away win at Ossett Albion followed by a 7-0 home win over Wakefield.

Their ground has a capacity of 2,500.

ITV showed close ups of Scholes immediately after both fouls and on neither occasion did he appear to be saying anything at all. The millions of users of Twitter (including thousands watching this match) also failed to mention this obvious and outrageous behaviour you speak of. Do you have the time in this game when this happened? I would like to report him to the FA.
