Actually, forget what I said. Apparently I forgot about West Brom.
Sorry!!!!!

But, here is the answer: There has
never been a top flight season without West Midlands interest. Villa were relegated for the first time in 1936 (as were Blackburn, both of whom were the last two founders to lose their perfect top flight records) for two seasons, when all of Brum, Wolves and West Brom were in the top flight, and again in 1967 for a longer spell, including a brief stint in the Third Division - conveniently when Coventry joined the top flight (and stayed there until 2001). Their most recent blip was in 1987, which lasted for only one year.
That's correct. The closest are Newcastle, Blackburn and West Ham.

Teams are ranked by number of seasons played. Where teams are tied, best finishing position is used, followed by frequency of said position, followed by average position. Season 2012-13 is not considered. Two other teams have eight appearances (Charlton Athletic and Leicester City). Asterisks indicate title-winning seasons; italicised numbers indicate best finishing position for all other teams. Seven clubs have appeared in what is now League One since 1992; Fulham and Wimbledon (as Milton Keynes Dons) have appeared in what is now League Two since 1992. Of all clubs to have appeared outside of the Premier League, Newcastle United have the best record, having won what is now the Championship on both occasions they have played in said division since 1992. Of all teams listed, only Coventry City have not finished in the top ten at least once.
The following teams have also finished in the top six at least once:
Norwich City (6)
3
Nottingham Forest (5)
3
Queens Park Rangers (5)
5
Ipswich Town (5)

None of these teams have finished in the top six more than once.
