Decisions like that make a mockery of the idea that we should call them "assistant referees". The only thing they seem capable of doing is running the line and watching for offsides, and they can't even do that particularly well much of the time. A few years ago we had a lino at Huddersfield who flagged an offside from a throw-in. However we were denied a late equaliser by one of the worst offside decisions in the history of football. Have a look if you don't believe me

Seems alight to me honestly that isn't even a bad one. We gave a penalty away the other week that ONLY the referee in all of humanity saw.

In the draw for the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup, Hyde United have been drawn at home .... to Darlington.

An interesting clash well within our ability to mess up! 2015 Hyde knocked us out of the cup. 1994 we played Hyde and won 3-1 in the FA Cup first round. IRC Hyde scored first before Bernie Slaven and a Gavin Worboys brace saw us through on the plastic pitch. Think Mike Pollitt saved a second half penalty. We lost at Carlisle ( as always ) in the next round.

Depends on the ref’s ego. Mate of mine used to ref some league in Kent and somehow a pre season friendly ended up with graham poll reffing. My mate ran one of the lines and was told - and I quote - “ins and outs and blatant offsides only, leave the rest to me”.

I used to ref my kids’ teams (I actually qualified too) and I quickly learned that nobody from either club can be trusted to give an offside. So I’d adapt my positioning to give me the best chance of getting the most important decisions right - eg for a corner I’d stand on the goal line beyond the far post so I could see the ball, most of the players, and be able to see if it crossed the line. For free kicks in the attacking half I’d stand level with the last defender. The only problem with this is it makes for more running to keep up with play if the ball is cleared, but I was younger and fitter then

IIRC they were only called assistant referees because the word linesman didn't fit in with female assistants, or lineswomen. Nothing to do with assisting the referee.

I don't think Darlington can complain, David Wheater should've been sent off for deliberate handball minutes into the season yet stayed on the pitch.

I don't get it - i would be telling them if you see something flag and attract my attention. I make the decisions but you have to help me.

Just jail people who assault other fans and players. Needs a hard line. Also immediate prison sentences for anyone bringing a pyro in. Pyros are illegal and yet the media and many clubs (and fan bases) glorify them.

A disabled fan was severely injured at the Oxford vs MK Dons game, as an away fan threw a pyro which landed near to them and exploded, causing them to have seizures.

This is not the first time it has happened with MK Dons - I witnessed an incident very similar a few seasons ago.

Well now we have one of the most vulnerable fans at a football game hospitalised and badly injured because of one. That’s where this leads. Eventually, someone will be maimed or worse, killed. The supporters’ association rightly condemned the presence of all pyrotechnics, which are illegal in football grounds anyway.

Say no to all pyrotechnic devices and smoke bombs in all crowds. It’s incredibly dangerous, especially to the vulnerable and disabled, who’ve just the same right to watch the game safely as anyone else.

To be fair flares have never been the preserve of English fan culture, our continental cousins had that market cornered, even at the height of the games rowdiness and nadir in the 80's. Having been attending games since the 80's and remembering those days, not that I condone the type of hooliganism that went on, the atmosphere is poorer these days and I do think the fan culture has been sanitised by the games authorities and the police, the atmosphere has been lost to some extent. Maybe I'm looking through rose tinted glasses but modern grounds don't encourage atmosphere, there are too many rules and regs surrounding games these days for the fan, crowds are much larger than they ever were in the 80's yet the atmosphere has declined, detrimentally so in my opinion.

I cannot remember them at all in England more then ten years ago. If you want “an atmosphere”, sing and offer words of encouragement and advice to the referee. Maybe I’m getting old.

Just waiting for the train home after a most enjoyable day out at a lovely ground. Bury thoroughly deserved to stay in the hat and possibly deserved to win, against opposition 2 leagues higher. I think Bury are now my official second team.

Thought that I would see how life was treating Fort William FC following their demotion from the Highland League to the North Caledonian Football League and August was not the best of starts considering they had home advantage: -

Manchester United have just announced a net loss of £115.5 million for the 2021-2022 season and in the same period, the club debt rose from £419.5 million to £514.9 million.

Figures of this magnitude will be meaningless to those non-league clubs who are in the hat for the FA Cup 3rd qualifying round, when you see how much money will be paid to both the winners and losers at that stage.

It was a really good game. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

They've wasted no time in getting a replacement though, unlike some other club I could mention.

Bilic has signed an 18-month contract with Watford. He may not last that long, but it'll be a nice little earner. Even if he flops, everyone knows how Watford are so he'd have to do a spectacularly bad job there to suffer any reputational harm.
