Any company worth its salt knows when to distance itself from matters that reflect badly on it through association.

Talking of being a cynic, have you ever noted my forum signature that I have used since I joined RailUK in April 2011.

How many people were aware of Bet888's association with The Chomper before today. Not many I would wager. A lot more people are aware of the company now though.
But, yes, I agree with your point in the main.

Your sig sums me up to a tee :D

Manchester United have made two high-priced signings on four year contracts:-
Ander Herrera...Midfield...£29 million, from Atletico Madrid
Luke Shaw...Defender...£27 million, from Southampton

Meanwhile, Lallana appears to be joining Liverpool for around £25 million... Most likely to be confirmed next week.

How does that help with the production of home-grown talent that progress into the first team, then hopefully into the England team ? A number of senior coaches have admitted that the standard of coaching in the academies are still repeating the same mistakes of tactical parts of the game.

Look at the younger English players in the World Cup squad. We see "rave notices" of their talent when weighed against the dross in the English leagues, but then see how they fare when playing in a tournament such as the World Cup, when players of similar ages, but far greater talent that is actually expressed on the field of play, show how much the English academy system needs to progress.

Looks like Liverpool are trying to sign the entire England team. If the Lallana deal goes through that will be 7 or 8 of the England Squad at Liverpool, with the likes of Jon Flanagon developing at a good rate yet to make the England Squad.
Will it benefit England if most of the team are playing together in one club?

As a red I don't really care how it benefits the England team. Could be worse for Liverpool I guess.

Southampton will have a bit of money to play with

56 million less the 25% of Lallana's fee to Bournemouth.

Bournemouth will be looking at 8 1/4 million if the £25m quoted about is correct. A lot of money for a championship team.

The English media will no doubt be delighted that there is a four year gap between each World Cup, as this gives the public time to forget past bad team performances and for the media to think of new and creative modes in which the "hype factory" can go into full production into the months leading up to the next World Cup.

Incidentally, has anyone any views on how the academy system of the English clubs can be improved, so that we can have similar skilled players to those of certain football nations who have come through their system ?

Get clubs to reduce obsession with fitness & work rate, and introduce a lot more practice in "ball skills" - how to pass accurately / constructively, and how to get the ball between the goalposts.

bb21 will be delighted with this news...:D

Incidentally, what a blessed relief that no World Cup matches were there to be broadcast on Friday evening.

I don't know, people complained when the England squad contained lots of Man Utd players ;)

As for Lallana - best of luck to him. Must confess that I haven't been that impressed with him in the world cup (whereas Barkley had a few good moments) but I'm not sure whether we can judge from that!

But no players - have we any Saints supporters on here ?

They have decimated their 1st team.....crazy or what ?

Not to mention losing their Manager.

The board has said the new manager can spend all the income on new players. Be interesting to see how that goes having an almost new team

I imagine they will continue to give some younger players a chance in the side, with the likes of Chambers, Ward-Prowse, Gallagher all seeing more game time.

Their youth system is a credit to the club, they have produced a series of wonderful players including Gareth Bale over the last few years.

Would even "scummers" be prepared to admit that - if there are any on here. My Brother is a Season Ticket Holder, and 2008 was a long time ago :p

Indeed, especially given that we are getting an extra £2mil out of blue according to richw. :D

@richw. Can you apply to be Southampton's new accountant?

I don't remember the last time we got so much money for a player. Never happened before.

Fantastic! :p

Not really. I think it would be much better if we are both going strong.

I noticed my error when I posted and forgot to edit  still 6 1/4 million is a lot for Bournemouth.

More than I have ever dreamed of I think.

Surprised that Southampton didn't seek to renegotiate the sell-on clause a few years back, as we would have easily bitten their hand off for some six-digit sum (say £300k) and given up the clause completely.

Cue Southampton trying to find any way to avoid paying the sell-on clause money.

By the sounds of things, looks like Salisbury FC won't exist for much longer, a shame :(

Talk about a turnaround with two goals in the last 10 minutes. The Mexican keeper has been stellar

How does said clause work if a club had liquidated and reformed? I.e. Rangers.
Obviously not applicable in this case, but the players would no longer be contracted to the old club, and get into a new contract with the new club, probably on a free as the old club no longer exists.

Anyone with any thoughts of the officially sanctioned break in play in both halves of World Cup matches in this tournament. It was said that in the first half, a temperature at lineside of 38.8 degrees C had been montored in the Mexico v Netherlands match.

That will be like The North Pole compared to Quatar :p

I think it would have been too unhealthy not to. I shudder to think how much water they'd have lost although perhaps it should be earlier than 30m in?

Because we're one of the best teams in the land.

Leeds United v. Accrington Stanley. Now that's a match that will certainly get the adrenaline pumping through balne-wonderer....:D

It's a titanic clash that's for sure.

Lee Peltier left the club last week and returned to Huddersfield Town, won't be missed, had a bad time at Elland Road.

Who knows what this coming season will bring? Mid table mediocrity I guess.

Bye bye McCormack.

Good to see the game move into the 21st century with the development of something starting to look like a heat policy, but it needs to be monitored as it could also be the start of a slippery slope towards playing all matches (heat or not) in quarters to the benefit of commercial interests. The SBS broadcast in Australia didn't go to a commercial break during the drinks break, but I bet there were some broadcasters around the world which did take the opportunity.

A 38.8°C temperature in the sun (all proper weather temperatures are in the shade) is not too bad, it was the humidity which was the real problem.

In my opinion, a better policy would be to take some inspiration from what works in Australian Rules Football - allow the teams' trainers onto the field with drink bottles for the players whenever there is a break in play. This could apply to just a goalkeeper kick, corner, goal or injury, and it shouldn't need to be any longer than 20 seconds each time thanks to the short distances the trainers would cover compared to the 25-30 seconds AFL trainers get on massive oval grounds like the MCG or Adelaide Oval.

Alternately, FIFA could legalise players wearing hydration packs like in mountain bike racing, or carrying hip flasks. Think of the revenue that could be made from selling team-branded hydration packs :D

That will be like The North Pole compared to Quatar :p
If (and it's still a big if) Qatar happens, the conditions will be easier to handle as while the temperatures are a bit higher it will at least be a less oppressive dry heat - the sweat will evaporate and provide the players with natural cooling.

The problem last night was the combination of heat and humidity, take away either one and they would have been fine. In hot+humid conditions, the body sweats to cool itself, but when the sweat fails to evaporate (due to the humidity) the body is not cooled and it responds by just releasing more sweat which leads to dehydration.

I think it would have been too unhealthy not to. I shudder to think how much water they'd have lost although perhaps it should be earlier than 30m in?
Speaking from my experience with doing team support for a cycling team where we'd rarely see any of the girls back at the team car for more drink bottles inside the first hour, I thought it was about right - just long enough to give the fair reward to the players in better athletic condition but also short enough that none of them were in any danger. But I may be biased as to what is appropriate because of who I hang out with, the women on the team are much harder athletes than any player at the World Cup.

It would have been interesting to see what was intended if the scores were level at full time, whether the breaks before each extra time period would have been lengthened.

EDIT: I understand this was not the first match with the cooling breaks, USA v Portugal also had them.
