What a disgrace in Cymru tonight - a shadow of the great Scottish teams of the past.

The spirit of Dalglish,Souness,Hansen, Law, Baxter and all the others has been well and truly extinguished by this bunch of "no hopers"

Southern league or what ?????

No point in sacking the manager , you can't make silk purse out of a sows ear!!

Very fortunate draw today against Brentford. Scunthorpe were getting absolutely mullered until the goal machine Leon Clarke popped up out of nowhere to head home the equaliser.

Very poor in defence, very poor in midfield, strikers starved of service, and David Mirfin sent off late on for 2 (deserved) yellow cards.

Can't believe Wales managed to win last night. I know its only Scotland, but still, it is nice to get the win. Still don't think Coleman is the man for the job though.

Reading a lot of negativity about england only winning 5-0. None of these moaning people have made mention of the fact that San Marino played a 9-0-1 formation though.

No need to rub it in  - we couldn't believe it either !!!

Haha.

Just saw some of the highlights (I didn't watch the game last night because I had almost given up on the team), and some of the decisions seem a bit odd. Can't see anything wrong with your disallowed goal, Bale probably shouldn't have got the penalty (although I can understand how it would look like a trip from the defender from the referees viewpoint) but we should have had a penalty for what was basically a wrestling move!

Fair play to you guys for the fans you brought down though. From what I can tell you totally sold out your allocation and also had a quite a lot in the Wales areas. And from what people have said, town was really buzzing during the day / afternoon. So well done on that front!

I completly agree, it is hard to play against teams who basically put 10 players in and around the penalty area. Everyone says we should of won 7-0+ but the fact is we won, we got 3 points. I heard on the radio at lunchtime someone saying if we are concerned about goal difference as we didn't build a cricket score up against San Marino then England don't deserve to be going to Brazil.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't a 1-0 win give you the same amount of points as a 8-0 win?? It doesn't matter about the score as England should qualify out of the group as winners by a few points

It has been said of this particular group that if points gained were level when all the group matches had been played, the matter of goals would then indeed be an important factor.

That comment is always made of any group that San Marino feature in, for rather obvious reasons.

For england they shouldnt need to worry about points difference, they should win their group with ease. If they dont then will be extremely dissappointing.

I am informed that Oldham Athletic did not score their equaliser at Bramhall Lane against Sheffield United until the 97th minute, with much time being added on by the referee

^^^^ Yeah good point for Latics yesterday but to be fair, Latics could have win that game as Sheff Utd was poor team in the match.

Also Latics player Lee Croft have denied making a racially abused at ball boy in yesterday match.

Oldham Athletic winger Lee Croft has denied allegations that he racially abused a ball boy at Sheffield United on Saturday.

The League One club has been informed that South Yorkshire Police are investigating the allegation.

"I've run over to get the ball, he's kicked it away and in my frustration I've said 'what are you doing?' and had a go," said the 27-year-old Croft.

"I've not said anything to offend the lad, I wouldn't do that."

The Football Association said it was aware of the allegations and was looking into the matter.

A statement for the League One club said: "The player has categorically denied the allegation. The club and his team-mates are fully supportive of him.

"The club will not be making further statements in relation to this matter."

While it is generally not important to win every game 8-0 I should point out that the Premiership was won by Manchester City on their superior goal difference, 7 (or 6 depending upon how you want to look at it) came from Trafford Rovers, sorry Manchester United :D

In group stages goal difference is important too as it can mean the difference between first and second place for that group and thus which team they would play against in the knock out stages.

In the Europe League and Champions League, teams on equal points are sorted by the head to head record first, with goal difference followed by goals scored being used after. However, in international competition, goal difference is used first to decide which team(s) qualify if they are on the same points, followed by goals scored.

So when you are up against minnows like San Marino, it is important in that respect to smash a fair few goals past them.

Anyway, I saw a blog post after Friday's match, which had a pretty good suggestion (IMO).

It was suggested that in Europe, the worst 9 international sides (10 if Gibralter are granted full internatonal status) would have to pre-qualify to take part in qualification for the Euro's and World Cup, with only 2 teams progressing to the full qualification groups.

I disagree, as would reduce the number of international these countries play and give them no hope for improvement. It could also give middle nations an oppotunity to play younger or inexperience international players, or try out a new formation, with pretty low risk by doing so,

Of course the seeding system makes it impossible for smaller nations/dependencies (if Gib are allowed in) to actually make it into the tournament. The odds are already stacked against them and to introduce pre-qualifying would simply reinforce the status quo.
In a truly random draw you could see (for example) Spain, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal and France all in one qualifying group.

I would love to see that happen, a complete random draw, and only ever the top 2 teams qualifying from the group, but unfortunately that will never happen as money talks. TV companies around Europe and the world don't want to see England, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Italy and France in the same group for a Qualifying tournament for either the World Cup or European Championships

One does not simply build a stadium with a retractable roof then call a game off due to wet weather conditions on the pitch...
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Apparently it kicked off in England's U21 match v Serbia too, with the latter's fans making racist chants towards English players and someone starting on Stuart Pearce...
