Absolute scenes in the European competitions last night as Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar somehow edged out Noah, winning a penalty shoot-out 6-5. They will no doubt be crushed by Braga in the next round but then will go on to the Conference League group stage.

Elsewhere, Virtus of San Marino sensationally somehow beat Milsami of Moldova 3-0 to progress to the Conference League play-offs.

The participation of clubs from these micro states has been an absolute goldmine for the clubs - Lincoln Red Imps will now get in excess of EUR 3 million just for being in the group, while I think Virtus should get around EUR 900,000 for getting to the play-off. Consider the fact that Virtus normally play at a one-sided ground that wouldn't even meet the lowest non-league standards in England.

One of my twin sons has my old collection of extremely old match programmes and in one, on the centre page section with the team names, one of the teams wore a kit of red shirts and white knickers.

Shorts were often referred to as knickers in the olden days, which was short for knickerbockers.

I used to collect "Bell Boy Famous Soccer Club" wrappers when I was a kid around 1960. Initially there were 72 clubs who all wore "knickers". The set was later extended to cover all FL and SL clubs and clubs 73 onwards wore "shorts". It always provided me and my friends with childish amusement me that Bradford (PA) was in the "short" set while Bradford City was in the "knicker" set.

Losing the likes of Cunha and Ait-Nouri was such a massive blow these sort of players aren’t easy to replace but we need to find someone with some creativity before the window shuts. Anyway things definitely seem to be looking good for Stoke at the moment.

Not sure who your comment about "abuse towards Rangers" refers to. Where we are concerned it's more amusement than anything else, but results like tonight are a reminder to never get too carried away.

I should have been more specific, it's the Rangers fans I was going for mainly because of their delusion of grandeur particularly towards qualifying for the group stage. All the noise from their part of town seemed to drown out anything similar from your side but I imagine there will be plenty of Celtic fans who similarly expected they had a divine right to breeze past Kairat. When they get tonked in Belgium tomorrow night it will be the same reply, terrible side.

The younger of my twin sons rang me with the final result and reminded me that he was at Old Trafford in Seotember 1995 for the League Cup 2nd round match against York City. York City won 3-0.

I was at Craven Cottage to watch Bristol City lose 2-0 against Fulham. No real complaints, City dominated the second half but had no end product and the two goals we conceded were really sloppy - a defensive mix-up for the first and awful defending of a terrible corner for the second. I'm sure it was an excellent game for the neutral, though, the referee was excellent, it was a cracking ground, and the atmosphere in the away end was lively (not necessarily lovely). I had promised my girlfriend (who has knee issues and doesn't come from a football-mad country) that she could sit down, but the entire away end stood up all game... hopefully my feet will have recovered by tomorrow!
