It was a two-legged tie, and Rangers won 3-2 at Ibrox, leading 3-0 after 30 minutes thanks to Stein (2) and Henderson, before Chico Faria and Wagner pulled two goals back for Sporting. In Lisbon, the teams traded goals (Yazalde and Laranjeira for Sporting; Stein on both occasions for Rangers) for 2-2, before Sporting scored again (Pedro Gomes) to make it 3-2 and force extra-time. In extra-time, both sides scored once (Peres for Sporting; Henderson for Rangers) to make it 4-3.

I always felt that the away goals rules should only have be in effect for regulation time. Otherwise the away team in the second leg had an extra 30 minutes to get an away goal.
The counter argument to this is that the home team had 30 minutes extra time at their home ground, with the away team then facing the potential scenario of taking spot kicks in front of a hostile crowd.
These days they don't play the away goals rule in the Champions League (if I recall correctly), and I would personally like to see the second leg go straight to penalties, as watching two knackered teams trying not to lose for 30 minutes is time we could all be spending in bed.
Fascinating story though.

I was a but confused by that too... was wondering if when shoot-outs were first introduced they always had both teams take each of their five even if one had reached an unassailable lead? Perhaps those who were around at the time can confirm?

The first penalty shoot-out I have any memory of watching was the Italia 90 last-16 match between Romania and the Republic of Ireland, in which all but one of the ten routine kicks were converted, the deciding one being saved by Irish goalkeeper Pat Bonner.

Meanwhile back in the club game, yesterday's home game against Leicester City ended in another defeat for Huddersfield, but no panic stations yet as the performance was more than adequate. Just an uncharacteristic goalkeeping error and some wayward finishing prevented a more positive result. I'm sure Leicester will improve over the season as their new manager imposes his ways and methods, but based on yesterday those who were ready to give up and hand the Foxes the trophy nine months early may have jumped the gun a little.

Yesterday was Luton Town's Premier League debut, and saw us fall to a 4-1 defeat at Brighton. This was no real surprise and whilst Brighton could have scored more the scoreline slightly flattered them. Our defence, in particular, and midfield have a lot to learn and need to do it quickly but at least we posed something of a threat in attack. Still, I think most of us fans are still rather surprised to be playing in the Premier League - unfortunately that might have extended to a few of the players! Apart from escaping the AmEx Stadium environs and getting back to civilisation, and later away from Brighton (and that's covered in a separate thread), it was a good day out.

Before the season started, the football powers-that-be made a statement saying they were going to crack down on deliberate intimidation of match officials. If players and managers choose to act in such a way during the very first match of the season, they have only themselves to blame.
