Nope - it was actually a Scotsman, Sam Leitch in 1963(?). Stelling (was it born then?) merely thought he was being big and clever by copying it.
And why is it every time I put this thread into the interesting wilds of Scotland some boring person drags it down south? When are we going to visit Fort William, Inverury, Airdrie, Wick, Cove, Ross County, if we keep coming back to England?

We don't go up to the north of Scotland (and the Highland League) because it's hard to come back from... Even a team such as Inverurie Locos are somewhat remote by rail standards; the loop to Inverness is our only option. So once it's been, that's it!

From Grimsby, itself a cul-de-sac, we shall head to Sincil Bank, home of Lincoln City.

I reckon it's because a lot of (English?) people are confused by the high proportion of Scottish teams that don't share their name with the town in which they play.

I second the demand for more trips north of the Tweed!
