In my opinion, Flickr is the best for sharing and viewing pictures.

The only issue is that it is prone to occasional error, such as returning searches as blank with the text "Bad, bad panda!".

I use a desktop and I have also noticed that it doesn't acknowledge input from the space bar when typing in searches, quite frequently this occurs.

It's a great shame that Fotopic.Net went down, that was a great site.

I tried to see if it was accessible on an archive site called waybackmachine.com but no such luck.

I still miss Fotopic dearly.

Fotopic was fabulous, didn't the original developer go on to create a site called "Pikfu", but I think that was very short lived.

I'm finding since the new desktop website design, when typing and submitting something into Flickr's search box, the site will simply do nothing. Sometimes at all, or sometimes it might 'wake up' after a few goes refreshing the page and trying again. I've found it happens in multiple browsers too. It's a shame because, since Fotopic left us, I'd say Flickr has become the natural replacement - particularly for niche subjects such as transport photography.

I have been browsing Flickr quite a lot recently as I gradually rediscover my interest in buses. The biggest disappointment is that it is, of course, a complete free-for-all in terms of the quality of submissions. This is true both of the images and any accompanying information. I am used to the dedicated aviation image sites where such things are very much controlled/moderated. Is it too late for a bus-based equivalent?

We’ll have to disagree here! This is actually what I like most about Flickr. Anyone’s pictures are welcome and some of the most interesting ones are often not the highest quality ones.

That kind of depends on the purpose of taking the picture in the first place. The fact that many bus pics have little or no useful information attached suggests to me that some people are more keen on seeing their name attached to web content than they are in sharing anything useful. I totally get that sometimes just getting the shot is more important than its quality but there are plenty of "repeat offenders". And I agree that controlling which submissions get put up can become heavy handed. But I do think that some photographers should think twice before sharing their efforts. It's like the old days of people showing off their holiday snaps to all and sundry: a lot of dross always mixed in.

There are some more specialised image sharing sites though few transport pics of any sort appear on them. Overwhelmingly the photographers who post on those sites are clearly aiming to produce interesting images of good technical quality. Perhaps having come across one or two of these sites I have been spoiled and have higher expectations everywhere else.
