One of the reason London has routes with overlapping sections rather than just terminating them at a common point

Oh I agree on this, entirely, as the overlaps help with distributing passengers through the city to stops that are most convenient for their destinations or connections.

Yeah 18 does get quite a few going to EK, The 6 picked up around Westwood, a few took it to Langside college to.

Its the 6A that terminates at George Sq. The 60 A runs to Milngavie.

My mistake, I knew it was one of the buses I have seen parked on George Square, I noticed there was a bus stop on Cochrane Street where a 21 starts from? Just to add anytime I have been in Glasgow this has to be the oddest setup is either a bus has terminated on the street or on the other it starts up.

I remember when I went to Easterhouse by accident (as I didn't know the route if I am honest), I was on it to the terminus and had been on for a couple minutes (at the time I had thought he stop/restart) but there was about 3-4 buses piled up at the terminus, apologised to driver (which at time kind of gave me a bit of a weird look) but had to ask where do I get on, was told to go to bus stop further up to get back!

Another one was couple years ago, bus pulled up at Clydebank (driver displayed Glasgow 1), I went to go on it driver told me he was going off he did apologise as did I but thought it was a bit stupid to display Glasgow but to say your going out of service (do drivers not get time to get the display changed before pulling in?)

The thing is with buchann st bus station is that its actually really well placed with motor way access , access to diversion routes and being so close to the galleries and the cinema and the unis and colleges

Reminds me of that Clydebank to the Hospital service from a few years back.

that CQ1 might of been one of the best ideas executed the worst, like what did they expect not stopping anywhere

Pretty sure the CQ1 was funded by the NHS themselves(not 100% sure) hence the lack of stopping anywhere but I agree that it didn't help.

Before Covid-19, I did wonder just how viable a service from Clydebank to Braehead would be for First considering it's incredibly common for people to switch over at Thornwood coming to/from further west or the hospital.

Clydebank-Whitecrook-Yoker-Scotstoun-Whiteinch-Clyde Tunnel-QEUH-Ikea-Braehead could be the route.

Easily possible that the 2 could have gone every 10 mins to compensate buses to run it or drop the 6 down to every 12 mins. Doubt it would be worth trying now though due to Covid-19

Was tried by Avondale and given up due to lack of passengers. Maybe the buses were a factor too. Perhaps a thought when the new bridge is built, more or less direct to Brae head and on to QEU hospital.

Yeah I remember using the Avondale service at the time when I was younger. Horrible buses for comfort etc. Would be worth a try I think

If I had a choice between First or Avondale, I'd definitely pick First.

More reliable, better drivers and better buses. The service seems better quality overall.

The rare times when I've seen an Avondale bus, they look like they will fall apart at every bump in the road.

If you ever get a chance read the Avondale reviews on Indeed. Paints an incredibly grim picture about working there. I'm surprised First cut the 42 when they did when it was Garscadden to Partick after the 1C started. It was still fairly busy and would have kept digging away at Avondale pretty quickly

I do believe the service was also paid for by West Dumbarton council.
It was, only used one bus which essentially meant there was no time to stop elsewhere to have an hourly frequency. Also the possibility that West Dunbartonshire Council didn't want to subsidise Glasgow residents!

As someone who had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with West Dunbartonshire council in my last job I'm surprised they even wanted to subsidise their own residents. Never the most pleasant people to deal with

It's pretty surprising how Avondale just keep going to be fair. If they were to vanish it wouldn't even be overly costly for First to step in.

Parkhall probably isn't great for bus use but First already cover the rest of their network except Linnvale. Maybe a reintroduction of a Drumchapel to Partick service via Garscadden and extension of the M60 into Linnvale but it wouldn't take too much to do that.

ON ANOTHER NOTE:

Looks like services going back to normal here. Only up to the 18 Monday-Friday timetable in forthcoming so far but I'm guessing more will be put in with time

Avondale is not the topic of this thread. Can we stick to discussing First please?

Its great for the coach services, straight off the M8. Bit of trek from Central and if you get off bus at bottom of town.

I think allowing buses to go along Arygle St and go straight on or turn right at Trongate would be good. I noticed other day too the amount of traffic lights buses have to contend with in town.

The problem with Glasgow city centre is where the big car parks are located. Traffic light sets could probably be taken away if those car parks weren't there. The one off of Midland St at Oswald St is a great example. The Broomielaw traffic lights would be enough so the next set could disappear and then the next ones would be at Argyle St. Would love to know the exact number of traffic lights in the city centre but it's overloaded with them.

Sadly it's not just a city centre problem though. I feel for the X4 drivers at peak times with turning right onto Westland Drive at Victoria park too. Would probably be quicker going along and up with the 3 and coming along Danes Drive and then up Westland Drive or even coming off the expressway at Thornwood and going up by the Broomhill shops and onto Crow Road then along the top of Victoria Park.

There does need to be a bit of coordination with the council. Many of the sets of lights are there for reasons of pedestrians not vehicles. Equally the city centre is managed to try and coordinate the movement of traffic more efficiently.

Yeah trying to get up to the top of Hope Street from the bottom of it shows how a lack of proper timing with traffic lights is a major problem. Been on enough buses to notice how most are lucky to make it through one set at a time even if it's not that busy. I always wonder if the council realise just how bad the traffic light set up is

Thats where i noticed while on a 6 . How many lights they are to go through. I think a lot is to do with the gridiron street layout of the City Centre.

Yeah I sometimes got the 6 home if the 1C wasn't due for 15/20 mins and I'd still be better off waiting on that 1C due to traffic lights. There's been times where my 6 has got to Knightswood Shopping Centre 30 mins after the 1C has just because of congestion caused by traffic lights

I am not sure if it may be worthwhile having a second bus station somewhere around the vicinity of Bridge Street Underground, which would help ease congestion for some of the south of the Clyde routes.

The site I had in mind was the former Bedford Bingo hall, which was a disused listed building that had a mysterious fire that caused it to be demolished. I am unsure if that site is still vacant or not, as I have not been past there for a good number of years.

Obviously, should if a southside bus station is built, this would ideally be part of a co-ordination of a multi modal public transport system as part of a phase for Glasgow to bring back trams.

Always wonder if another street terminus with multiple stops like Osborne Street would help First. Further uptown would obviously be ideal like Renfrew Street.

Would obviously be helped if it became a bus only street.

Im sure some buses used to terminate at Bridge St. I dont think it would be popular as most would want the bus to take them right into the City Centre.

Not been out an awful lot lately but when I have been the buses near where I stay have looked considerably busier and going by the app there's been a lot more "bus full" displayed than previous weeks. Do think the increases are needed to be fair

First services are due to return to Pre covid schedules from next week. Although still with limited capacity.
