If first had the capital investment many moons ago then the only logical way would have been to get Baumot or Eminox to upgrade the exhausts on euro3 or 4 buses or replace buses more often, of course, bottom line I don’t think first have given a damn for years despite there being previous talks about LEZ in scotland etc.

Its a total and complete stark contrast to the city on the east coast, yes edinburgh, Lothian buses are striving to get rid of most of there euro 3 and 4 buses as fast as possible, and yes I do understand they have a further 2 years to have everything sorted.

Regards to the E3 and E4 buses FiG have, theyve been here, there and everywhere so they have earned there keep I suppose and many of them are still comfortable, which is one thing I still admire about older buses like the B7 deckers, but considering that it’ll cost between £10k - £15k per bus to upgrade with a new compliancy exhaust system yet this LEZ isn’t to be complete until 2022 by which time for example many of the Euro 3 and 4 buses will be approaching a 15 year old life or more, replacement age is something that first arent wildely known for i suppose, many of them already older than that atm, the Presidents and ALX400s for example should start being scrapped with the delivery of the 75 new ones on apparent order.
Spending between £10-15k per bus when you will technically only get a few more servicable years is quite frankly shocking to say the least.

Adding insult to injury, adding a new E6 exhaust system onto a E3 engined bus and another onto a E5 engined bus, the operational long term cost will be higher for the E3 retrofitted engine, as the E3 engine without its stock emission system would naturally be spitting out more NOX emissions ergo the E6 retrofit system would have to use more AdBlue than it would when fitted to a E5 Engine.
Same impractical case when you consider that periodic DPF cleaning may need to take place for the best perfomance, the E3 engine spitting out more particulates than an equivalent E5 engine meaning the E3 engined bus would need its filter cleaned far more often, impinging on the operation.
Most older E3 and E4 ECU systems don’t have the capability to automatically regenerate the DPF meaning it would need to be removed from the exhaust and done manually with an external machine.
However most E5 engines have more advanced ECU systems so that Active On-Road or Parked Regenerations of the DPF can take place.
Passive Regen takes place all the time using natural engine heat within the exhaust, but around a city this may not be enough.

Euro 4 and 5 engines should be the ones to go for though, regards to First taking other vehicles from other areas is just down right stupid, even though outlying areas may not have LEZ’s it’ll mean that perhaps falkirk or Stirling who already have faultering bus services and passengers number falling will have to most likely endure older buses, which again should’nt be the philosophy when operating a public transport company!

Apologies for the rant btw, engineer at heart

They Euro 5's aren't prime candidates for conversion, it'll be the Euro 3 B7TL's that'll need to be done and done pronto if they want to continue to run in Glasgow City Centre by the end of year for when the first LEZ comes into play.

It is unlikely that Euro 3's will be given the conversion. This is the likely reason for the recent swap of single deckers with First Scotland East.

What single deckers got swapped? I don't recall anything recent happening other than the Volvos to Aberdeen.

A lot of talk on this thread and not very much fact. The 242 service is due new E200MMC buses in the very near future, part of the 75 new buses to be delivered before Christmas. 6 routes will benefit from the fleet upgrade (many will be routes you wouldn't expect) and it's expected this will see the B10BLE, B7Ls off fleet. majority of Tridents to stay for another year with several "newer" vehicles to get the Euro6 pack.

It is also worthy noting that the ex Kernow Darts are now going through the bodyshop.

And how long will they Kernow Darts last up here? Transferring 16 year old buses to replace buses of almost similar age is no going to solve any problem whatsoever Glasgow currently has fleet wise. A complete fleet overhaul is needed and I would have thought Andrew Jarvis would have been able to do that. Clearly not...

Does Maxim Park pay something towards the 2 and 242 – ie a variation of developer funding? My other half teaches not a million miles from Eurocentral and the volume of cars heading there at rush hour is amazing – do the buses do OK?

The Kernow Darts have a value of zero, so it's no loss to the company to take them on. They are worth their weight in gold as they have been proven to be in very good condition, the ones that are already here drove up all the way with no failures. They are a stop gap more than anything and will not even enter the City.

As for a fleet overhaul, rome wasn't built in a day. Give the man time. If it wasn't for Mr Jarvis we wouldn't have buses going every weekend to Bus World Blackburn for a full refurbishment (There are currently 4 there including two 375** series buses) as well as an extensive round the clock repaint program here. Also 75 new buses due is certainly an investment.

I honestly don't know where you got that info from but the 242 defo ain't getting new buses. The main focus this year on new buses will be city centre operations only. Overtown will be getting a few ex Kernow Darts 2 of which will replace the Marshall darts.

Being a public forum I'm not exactly going to name where the information came from but you'll see. I will say that half the E200s that are on order are useless for city work being 44xxx numbered examples.

And that's the issue with public forums, you get all sorts of people spewing out their wild imaginations as facts. Some people saying 25 buses are due, some are saying 75 are due. Until it's OFFICIALLY announced as to whats due and when, why not just wait and see what happens. Posts without reputable sources should always be taken with a big pinch of salt as more often than not, they turn out to be nonsense.

Which councillor? When did he/she announce it? Yet again you post things with no evidence to back it up.

From information that I had received, these are or were supposed to be due in 2019. If they get delivered before then, then that got to be good news.

Hopefully you stick around for the new stock coming in over the next 3 months so we can see an apology . I wouldn’t hedge your bets on the Tridents going in any great volume.

As for the councillor stating the 75 buses, this was stated by First at the Glasgow City Partnership meeting the other week in the City Chambers.

To be fair I think Andrew Jarvis is moving FiG in the right direction. I guess only time will tell but so far things seem to be going forward. I think they’ve realised that the B9TLs are good solid buses and even the new stuff would probably not live up to that quality so it’s best to refurbish the great buses we have rather than completely let them run to ruin like First normally do. The refurbished Gemini’s looked great and with the branding even better.

I really hope the rumours are true and more buses do arrive to oust the remaining ex-London stock and also the earlier millennial B10BLEs/B7L singles. It’s been a pretty rocky few years for Glasgow in terms of fleet. Since about 2007, first have been bombarded with ex-London stock which slowly was withdrawn. However I think they are only fully starting to recover from that and it’ll be nice to see a nice uniform fleet and also refurbished Gemini’s alongside.

It would be nice to see ex-Parkhead totes receive newer buses as they haven’t really seen much in the way of new stock since about 2005. They used to get some of the newest buses but now it’s full of 51, 53 and 54 plate stock. It would be nice to see E400MMCs on some of those routes alongside the refurbished B9TLs. Here’s hoping we see new stock soon!

That Gemini is from Blantyre depot & it was on the U1, Wonder what route it's for mind you with just having the wedge livery but with no half colour from the front like 37202, 37205 & 37206
