Getting back to FGW, does anyone think that they have proved that "integrated" franchises have made things better/ worse? Are things better now than if Thames/ Wessex were separate?

I think Oxford has benefited as there are now a lot of HST operated services to Paddington throughout the day, providing faster journeys in greater comfort than before. Similarly HSTs are also being used at other places such as Hungerford, Keynsham, Filton and stations in Devon & Cornwall which previously would not have had HST services, meaning that there is extra capacity in times that need it and increased journey opportunities are available.

The question I ponder when this happens (e.g. Anglia) is whether Inter-City services will be "dumbed down" or regional services will be brought up to a higher standard

I don't have the pre-Great Western timetable so can't say if it's an increase in frequency, but if nothing else it is an increase in capacity at a very busy time of the day (the train arrives 0817 into Temple Meads).

Yes, it's 100% more HSTs than before, very few lines have had that sort of increase

On a train from Bristol TM to Southampton Central back in December 2009, I overheard one passenger say to her friend that FGW was 'fantastic'.

Their reputation must have improved!
