First Great Western - Trainee Drivers

I've taken and passed the assesments with another TOC and I am on hold with them......I also applied for FGW.

I enquired a week ago if my application was being processed any further.
My reply from FGW was they were waiting for dates to sit the 2nd part of the test, the fast reaction and the concentration tests.

I replied that I had sat and passed these and I'm still waiting for them to get back to me........I assume they will ask me to attend the CBI when they have dates available, who knows ?

It does take quite a long time to process everyones forrms, etc...... not an enviable job I imagine

Please excuse the lame/desperate question but on my application I put Chippenham as my nearest station (25 minutes) and I live about 50 minutes from Bristol TM.

Reading the Forum, i now realise Westbury is a significant station and I only live 15 minutes from there. Is it worth calling and changing my application ( I'm still awaiting shortlisting!) and if so does anyone have a contact number which gets direct to the right people rather than the general number on the website?

Westbury Depot sign Cardiff Central - Portsmouth Harbour, Bristol Temple Meads - Weymouth, Bristol Parkway - Taunton (including Weston-Super-Mare) and Westbury - Swindon via Melksham. Also Swindon - Bath Spa and Taunton - Castle Cary as diversionary routes.

I'm slightly confused as to why they need 700 more drivers to be honest. IEP can't be adding that many more diagrams, does FGW have a lot of retirements coming up or something?

A lot of the 'new' drivers are being taken on with the proviso that they will be transferring to Cross Rail. Network Rail are footing the training bill. Although FGW are running the training courses.

I received an email from FGW today saying that I had passed the 1st stage asessment however it was a borderline pass so they will not be taking this application forward.

However if any further vacancies come up we wil be put straight through to stage 2 if we apply again

Bad news that Anthony. Think positive though, you now have a 'pass' under your belt and hopefully the next round of applications won't be too far away.

Sorry to hear that news when did you go to stage 1 assessment?

I had my stage 1 asessment on 3rd June. Pity really as I passed the tests just others had a slightly higher score.

Hopefully I will have another go in the future how long are the test results valid?

Anyway I have got a job now working as a bus driver for first cymru

3 years with First and 5 years with ATW

Im still waiting from applying back in August last year

Nonsense. That could only apply to Paddington, and it doesn't. It's just messroom gossip and current contracts are identical to previous ones. Crossrail will (other, I believe, than some HEX drivers), be staffed by recruitment not TUPE.

The training and recruitment need is to cover current shortfalls in establishment, retirements and natural wastage (including Crossrail's impact when drivers transfer who are recruited), for flexibility during electrification (NR's funding) and for staffing while retraining the whole driver establishment on electric stock.

Odd, as that is not what my Manager at FGW says. Maybe you know different, but can't see FGW loosing 300+ drivers over the next 2 years. Natural wastage or not.

The new drivers at Reading as well as Paddington (it is alledged) will PTR&R over to CrossRail.

I mean the staff will be TUPED over to CrossRail in the same way staff are TUPED over now when the franchise holder changes.

Hey bud, no I was there when the guys above us where there 29th and they have been invited so? but I know all the assessment's where held within 5 days of each other or so, so I can't imagine that it would make that much difference and besides the other fella Anthony didn't make it he was at Bristol so again I can only imagine they would contact the passes first and failure's second? makes sense to me but you just never know. This might give a bit of hope to all... I have a friend who is currently on the driver course with a different TOC she was a conductor with them, she took her tests 2 yrs ago and when she got to the first day of her course which started in January 2013there where 2 guys there 'outsiders' who took there tests when she took hers. It took 2 yrs before they got on and she said the only reason she got on is because she wears a BRA... I literally mean a BRA i.e. '' a women'' Her words not mine! 'equality and all that, because her scores where very low apparently and others got the nod quicker than her so I presume the outsiders got low scores as well and was apparently a shock when they got the call out of the blue

Could you fellas tell us how you think got on at first stage, How many you answered etc... Also did you get your results through an email Pass good, borderline or whatever because that would help a great deal with understanding if I didn't just get enough and others where quicker because honestly I thought I did pretty dam good... maybe luck of the draw as well ay? only so many places and close your eyes and pick some out of the huge pile where all the scores are within 1 or 2 of each other. The odds are that with so many people taking these tests ( at least 60 on my morning session) there has to be more who got the same score than there are starting course places I don't know just a theory!!! WOW maybe I'm going slightly insane must be the constant email checking only to find another offer of discount Viagra and women wanting to meet me in my area tonight

I got three quarters down on each page for the dots test. I didn't have much trouble on the glop and on the dials did about 31-32. I haven't recieved any results so far in terms of how well I passed. Only had emails/texts to tell me I've passed. I did have a phone call asking what date I wanted to sit the second stage though.

Nice one I'm pleased for you honestly, just wish I was in your shoes lol..... I'm sure it was the dials just didn't answer enough Oh well, Oh sorry what depot did you apply for out of interest I went for oxford but to be honest I would go anywhere keep posting and I will wish you luck
