Cheers, :) As to railway food, it's expensive everywhere, it's traditional after all.

i'm starting to get quite into this loco hauled business that seems to be a fashion statement at cardiff central. i think, along with probably a huge other batch of enthusiasts, that what runs this coming monday will be of great interest. if the 14.00 taunton goes out with the usual 67's then it'll be a question of what appears on the next FGW service (think people have said 17.00) what do the bookies say???? spare 67's, arriva 57's, west coast 47 or colas 47's. the last two have been mentioned but are somehow probably impossible!!!!!!!!

there was also a plan to use DVT's as well though so the two diagrams could be done with two 67's in that case. i went for a spin up the Ebbw vale line on the 24th Oct and when my HST passed Canton there was a formation there that caught my eye as there was a DVT present. the train was "royal" 67 + DVT + 3mk2's + "royal" 67. if i remember i don't think the coaches were royal so not sure what this train was. but like i said there was a DVT there but i've been to Cardiff 3 times since and the taunton train still has top+tail 67's. on one occasion the train had 3X intercity mk2 + 1X valley lines mk2. after that date i took this train to Bristol TM and it was back as a 3 coach train. full to the brim on the return. odd why they removed the 4th coach

It is 100% confirmed that 57s will be on the 1400 Cardiff Taunton unless they fail

Also, Intercity livery coaches have never appeared on the diagram, nor have valley lines.

Re: your last sentence about the coaches. what do you mean? the 14.00 Cardiff to Taunton uses 3 BR blue mk2 intercity coaches. what do you mean when you say this diagram does not use these type coaches?

They aren't "Intercity" coaches - that was branding applied during the 80s/90s.

Besides, it used 4 Mk2 coaches, painted into Blue/Grey livery and are owned by Cargo D. They are in no way affiliated with the Intercity sector of British Rail which is defunct, nor do they carry the livery which came much later than the one painted onto them.

i don't know a great deal about coaching stock and am keen to learn more - I just assumed they were as they have intercity written on them. and because their livery is like what we would have seen in late 70's to 80's. i can 100% confirm that there was a valleys line coach added on one of the days i went up Cardiff. the train came in from taunton 18.20 ish with the 67 then the purple valleys brake coach + the 3 mk2 blue ones + 67

No, that's an EWS Brake coach.

The CURRENT diagram is to go over to 57/3s with a new Diagram starting for the 67s.:)

Well, i guess they could either be an Ex Wessex Mk2 or the DBS / EWS Mk2

And the ATW 57 with 2 Rivera Mk2s

apologies. yes it is an EWS brake coach. i just went into my phone video shots and someone walked past as the 1st carriage came thru. i just about saw the 3 beasties logo at front. looks at a glance very similar to the valley ones the class 37 hauled on the Fishguard service few years ago unless i'm mistaken again and that train had 4 X EWS coaches (when it ran with the maroon stock). those photos of the royal locos and class 82 with coach stock at Swansea is fantastic. for filming the new welsh docu drama on S4C "ar y tracs"

anyone see what left to Taunton at 14.00 today then? was it top+tail 57's and what stock, how many coaches and what about the 17.00 working?

Was a class 158 as the 57/3s set failed.

was going to pop up CC tues 15th to have a look but is it worth it now? do you think they'll have a loco hauled train tues? the last thing FGW are going to want is hassle with troublesome 57's again! if a 158 was available as a spare then there obviously wasn't a surplus loco anywhere.

didn't go up just in case. please let us know about the 57/3 set that went to Oxley. wasn't sure if it'd be back by today (Tues) so gave the trip a miss. knowing my luck i'll have missed something unusual!

Service into (Cardiff) Central from Taunton at 13:24 (11:05 ex Taunton?) was 57316 and 57303.

So it would appear that the service is still top-n-tail (even if with 57303 instead)

they sorted 316 overnight then. wish i'd gone up now for a spin. trouble with winter though it isn't the greatest time to be standing on platforms for a few hours!

No they're in Anglia Railways livery, debranded.

Check out http://scott2007.fotopic.net/p62478586.html taken by 43034 The Black Horse, a member from this board.

Now, 57303 is one of my last ones required for haulage, I wonder will it stick around until Monday as I'll be finished work for Christmas then, time to go onto Ryanair and see if there's any bargain flights to Bristol......

if anymore 57's go wrong and they are bound to, given time, where will FGW look to resolve it. will they opt to replace the loco haulage or draft in some other loco classes? i remember someone saying FGW doesn't want to be seen to be "playing with trains" by putting 47's etc on the service as a bonus to enthusiasts, but how could a 47 be any worse than a 57 failing on the 1st day of the service?!!

Well I've looked very carefully at the train times available and it should be a good day out.

Now with the short times at Exmouth and Barnstaple, can I presume that the services below are operated by the same train?

2F29
Paignton: 1213
Exmouth: 1350

2B78
Exmouth: 1353
Barnstaple: 1535

2F43
Barnstaple: 1543
Exeter St Davids: 1648

I mean if it's the same train, I might as well do the mileage plus get my head down, :) One important question remains though, what's the booked traction?

the loco hauled service does not serve Barnstaple nor Exmouth. runs from Cardiff 08.00 to Paignton via station stops along that route. 12.47 it returns from Paignton back to Cardiff. the closest it will get to Exmouth is Exeter SD. since the top'n'tail 57 is now on the Cardiff - Taunton 14.00 the other set would be still down south so i think i'm correct in saying that the top'n'tail 67's that used to run the 14.00 Taunton now leave Cardiff at 08.00 for Paignton. or at least that sounds logical anyway.

Indeed so...

Had a go on both sets yesterday, finally copping 67017 for haulage. Bizarre sight of Virgin, Anglia and ATW liveries all on one train in Bristol TM made for a couple of funky photos and video clips.

Now to await 315 to get swapped over with another one, or 303 for that matter. 305 and 309 would be nice!
