My understanding is that the current top and tailed class 67s and mark 2 set will go on to the new Paignton diagram. The taunton diagram will be top and tailed 57/3s and mark 2s and/or mark 3s with the stock stabling over night at Bishops Lydeard on the West Somerset Railway.

Yes that's it (Well it's what the drivers and guards have been told!). New set will be Mk2s if it goes to plan.

Interesting...Would be rather good if this could one day lead to seeing a Bishops Lydeard to Taunton service...

Other than that, i hope that they are going in for more Cargo D Coaches and the mixed rag bag of Riveras...

Well...ive got to say that you wont be able to ride behind 57301 for at least two months if that...and unlike the Railway Herald...i know the official reason...

Other that that i can tell you that its in eastleigh for heavy maintenance...

has a knackered engine! all this i know you don't bollox!

Well, its currently sat in Eastleigh works undergoing maintenance by Arlington Fleet services with its engine sat out next to it, and its gears all over the floor...

Will WSR be doing maintenance?

wsr.org.uk said:
The Railway replies to a number of questions arising from the new contract to stable mainline trains at Bishops Lydeard. The contract with GBRf runs from 14 December 2009 to June 2010 and will see the stock of the Cardiff-Taunton mainline service, formed of MkII or MkIII coaching stock top and tailed by Class 57 locomotives, move onto the Minehead Branch each evening around 9.30pm for stabling and servicing. The stock then returns to Taunton at around 6.10am next morning. The stock will return to Cardiff at weekends for weekly exams and external cleaning, and refuelling the locomotives. Should refuelling be required on the WSR it will be carried out from a road tanker at the level gated access point near Dene Bridge with the refuelling company carrying out risk assessments, carrying spill kits, and covering the operation under their public liability insurance. It is possible between two and four spare coaches will be stored at Bishops Lydeard. The Railway continues to talk to GBRf about the use of the sets at weekends. Possible uses include a Bishops Lydeard to Taunton link during Gala events, or for railtour operators to run excursions to destinations such as Weymouth, York or Paddington. The Railway's Class 47 drivers will convert to Class 57 by means of a one day course, so that in an emergency, the set can be moved. Whilst not strictly a heritage operation, the contract builds new business for the future, and helps secure the link to the mainline at Taunton.

Even though GBRF will be operating this, I always thought it would make more sense to operate the Paignton diagram with 57s as FGW drivers at Exeter sign these.

Does the current Bristol / Cardiff - Taunton diagram remain the same post December?

As posted before in this thread. FGW HSS men do NOT sign to Cardiff making it pointless.

Current diagram will remain same, yes. :)

Even if this diagram only goes to Paignton once a day it'll be much more comfortable than a nodding donkey!

Indeed, I was quite happy not to mention relieved to see a Sprinter in July when I had to travel from Preston to Blackburn, not so happy in the morning when I had to make the return trip with a Pacer, <(

so this starts on the 14th?

Just on the subject, I'm booking flights over with Ryanair to do the FGW / ATW loco hauled on the 28/29th of December, would you say its a safe bet they'd be running over this period?

National Rail shows them as operating (The ATW definitly runs hauled as booked for buffet service), but whether the FGW ones are hauled or not I'm unsure as I though they would have spare units with less trains been run over the period.

Last year the FGW one produced when I was over around the same dates.

The stock positioning move is taking place today from Eastleigh-Bishops Lydeard, 5V66 08:25 ex Eastleigh.

Training runs to Cardiff will then commence in preparation for the start of services.

I had a text to say that today's move is been carried out by a 66 and is two hours down due to a door fault on one of the coaches.

66844 was on Eastleigh earlier according to Vaclad10 on the WNXX forum. So should be the one on it. Someone else on the same forum (d1033?) posted something about 57314+316 going with it I think, both of which are ATW locos ain't they?!

Someone else has corrected that post on the WNXX forum, apparently it's 315+316 not 314+316. Seems an odd idea to have Arriva locos on it, unless it's just for the training runs.

full diagram for this working is:

Bristol TM 0619
Cardiff 0720

Cardiff 0800
Bristol TM 0855
Taunton 1002
Exeter SD 1035
Paignton 1127

Paignton 1247
Exeter SD 1333
Taunton 1409
Bristol TM 1517
Cardiff 1629

Cardiff 1700
Bristol TM 1753
Taunton 1908

Taunton 1917
Bristol TM 2045

Looks like the 19:17 Taunton-Bristol operates as an e.c.s. as doesn't display in National Rail.

The National Rail website is ridiculous, it should show all trains regardless of time.

Its the same in the morning, type in from Taunton-Bristol Parkway after 07:15, and it doesn't bring up the 07:28 hauled service. I had to split it in to Taunton-Weston then Weston-Bristol Parkway to see the timings.

Yep, it is a farce. But you have the diagram anyway so not a big problem. :)

Just been totally bowled out on my two day post Christmas bash as I've just discovered there's an engineering blockade on between Newport and Bristol Parkway. My own fault as I should have checked before booking flights, lucky they were cheap.

Anybody reckon the hauled sets will stick to their diagrams south of Parkway or will they be replaced by units as a result of having some spare due to the blockade?

i.e. I arrive into Bristol airport at 08:45 on the 29th, and the plan was to start off on the 09:25 Temple Meads-Weston, now what are the chances of that been a 57?

We were all wondering the same on the set today, and no one is sure what's happening (well, as far as we can tell!). Once/If I find out, i'll tell ya.

So next year about February, I should be getting all lines done south of Taunton with the exception of Gunnislake which I should get done hopefully next week plus get the chance to sample First Class on the way to London from Paddington.

That is of course barring any problems.

Talking of First Class travel, I aim to be on the 1500 ex Plymouth back to Paddington which has a Travelling Chef as the FGW site states - what's the service like?

Service is generally good, FC gets its own trolley going round with light refreshments, which also takes orders for foods made by the chef (thats if the train isnt revised!) The food is generally good, and menu/prices can be viewed on FGWs website under Travelling with us > Food and Drink. Bit expensive if you ask me, but isnt all train food these days!
