I have got to got to Birmingham International 16-17 from Southampton. For £120 with my disabled R/C I can go First Class as against say £60 Standard. In First with Cross-Country do you get any catering in theory please? For double the money I would hope that I would actually get a seat from Brum in the evening ... last tme I did the trip the 1715 from Brum International to Bournemouth was like a cattle truck! Only cattle have 'human rights' as do sheep these days.

Cattle and sheep have rights because they are forced into what they do. You however, have a physical choice whether you get onto a packed train or not. Are there not reservations available?

I didn't think you could get railcard discounts on FC tickets?

You do if you're not young...

Y-Ps are the only ones that don't get discounted FC tickets, Disabled, Old etc. do

I don't think MoD cards do either...

Hmph! It is rather unfair that all other railcards attract a discount, yet YPR doesn't. If it was all railcards but not OAPs, there would be an outcry...

To answer the FC offer question:

On Cross Country Voyagers, you get exactly what VXC used to offer, albeit with different hot drink cups.

The offer is:

A snack box- consisting of a small filled sandwich, with two options to choose from- One Meat/Fish etc, and One Vegetarian option.
Kitkat
Pretzles
Apple slices

For breakfast, you can have a snack box with a hot bacon roll, which are good when not very over cooked, or a cheese and egg roll. These come with a yogurt, and apple slices.

Drinks- Orange Juice, Water, Hot Chocolate, Cola, Tea and Coffee.
Headphones are complimentary on request.

FC on Voyagers is quite good if you've not had to pay a huge quantity more for FC vice SC, especially for people like myself who get used to the reclining seats, quieter carriages, and superior legroom.

Fair enough with disabled person's railcards; it's as much or a right as holding a parking sticker. But I don't see why Y-P don't qualify and OAPs, for example, do. Most young people are sensible, and the few that aren't must make the difference here. It's a terrible prejudice on us. In my experience, anyway, older people are more likely to cause problems because some take the "respect your elders" motto just a bit too far...

Of course, I also think that anyone intelligent enough to buy a Y-P railcard would be intelligent enough to understand the benefits; most trouble makers probably won't see that when they buy it.

Having said all that, rarely if ever would I even think of using FC (the only exception that comes to mind is a Pendo, and that'd be for the meal service).

Try getting a Value First Advance C/B/A on a Pendolino Primo service....
Go on... You'll have a bit of a challenge on your hands to get one! ;)

*I won't mention the fact that I blagged myself onto the 17:35 ex Euston 2 Wednesdays ago, and enjoyed the starter, Pork, and cheese and biscuits with my free ticket :D

I also won't mention that my other two Primo sevices were in the region of £25-£50 for FAS singles ex Euston

MoD doesn't get discount 1st tickets, although it would have been fun to actualy travel on my MoD card, back when I had it.

Anyway, there's no Heathy person's railcard, and the YPR doesn't have the discounts because everyone's institutionaly ageist!

Although VT are the nicest when it comes to RCDs

On my recent booking s on both NXEC and VWC from Glasgow, FC AP tickets were cheaper than SC with YPR, due to the quota system, and SC quota's being used up before FC quotas.

Regrettably I'm not now. It was a palaver and a half to get my Disabled card. However when I was a YP, before I could get a Student R/C, there was no such thing as a Y/P Card. It was Child Fare and that was it! Buses we could get a Rover for at Child Rate and there was a Child Twin Rover for the Underground. When I was a student though i used it...£6.20 Open Return I think it was from Feltham to Bristol Parkway via Reading. It was so good that I used to go home at weekends from Bristol and get fed up and have washing done! It was HSTs then and then a slow electric train the Feltham and then bus, on a Friday evening. In reverse on Monday mornings it was Mum's taxi to Feltham, then train to Reading, then wait for 20 minutes, folliwed by a train to Parkway then bus to College and be at desk by 0930! I USED that Student R/C, and it was worth every penny. By the way that was in 1976-77!
