According to my sources, the first Class 70s will be arriving on the ship BBC KUSAN, which is due to berth at Newport docks 2 section at 2039 tomorrow evening (5th Nov).

I heard its due at falmouth on fri for refuel at 16:00 then on to newport

I tried to locate it early but assumed it must be at anchor off Newport as none of the various shipping sites show it.

Hmm so there not really going to be a common sight then. Why didnt Freightliner use some of the stored locos? Surely it would be cheaper to get stored locomotives going for the time being i.e Class 60/66's than spending millions on brand new builds...
I can see they are more 'eco friendly' than a class 60 for example, but surely your creating more emissions actually creating/building the new locomotives than running slightly older locos which arent that friendly..
Hope some of you understand what Im getting at..

A few problems-

1/ FL dont own/ lease any 60s, they are "owned" by DBS, would you sell locos to your main competitor.

2/ When they were ordered there was a lot of new work coming FLs way.

3/ the 70s are more powerful and have a higher tractive effort than anything in this country, so FL trains hauled by the 70s wont need to be looped so much and so aid delivery times.

would be nice to see the 60s used more though, very sad sight seeing them at Toton :cry:.

Just seems a waste to have all those locos rotting away. the 60's arent even 20 years old yet am i correct?

Slight problem with that is that it hasnt actually been proven yet.... its all very well slinging them round a test track but until they start going around our network pulling 2000 tonnes of coal up hills then I dont think anyone has a real idea what they are going to do.

The only way they wont be looped as much is if they can prove they can keep to higher speeds and accelerate better. If FL decide to make them longer and in turn slow them down, then they will still be looped and thats only if possible !! there are fewer and fewer long loops about now.

Moored at Newport now. Does anyone know how long the unloading of a ship like this takes? Mostly just out of curiosity. And where are these headed once unloaded? I know that they've been tested in the US but I assume that there will be some testing over here too.

A fair few hours from past experience, the DBS lads usually help out with it (well they did with the majority of the 66 orders) but I've no idea, might take longer as they are a new class? It may be they don't move today. As for where they will go... I've no idea sorry

Local roumer has it that the 1st two class 70s are to go direct to Ipswich for crewe familiarisation & training. I thought they would normaly go to Derby for commisioning first. Any one else heard any different?

The Class 70s will be sent to Lawley St in Birmingham over two nights.

Night 1 will be Newport to Stoke Gifford, and night 2 will be Stoke Gifford to Lawley St via Stourbridge Jct.

I suspect that they have to go for crew familisation so that the drivers can take it on thetest track!

Although the controls may be similar to other classes, there may be some quirksor other subtle changes.... like how to adjust the aircon.:roll:
