The Huxleys have been entered into the RSL / TOPS systems, the paperwork is done, and they are on the roll to Stoke Gifford hauled by 66585, having passed Newport at 0009 some 13 mins b/t.

Dam...couldnt we have found someone in the navy to accidently have pressed the Fire button...and do some practice for catching pirates at the same time...

Perhaps they were eyeing up the ship aswell...just imagine the embarrasment if it had had the wrong paper work...

If they do the job they are intended to do who cares what they look like,class 37's, 58's and 66's aint the best looking locos, I have noticed a lot of you enthusiasts at said locations queing up to photograph them, if they are so ugly why bother?

By this rationale anything industrial should look hideous. The magnificent Manningham Mills in Bradford, or the Albert Dock in Liverpool should have been tin shacks, as they would have done the job just as well.

This could get quite philosophical. It could be argued (and has been over the centuries) that beauty is related to function - if an object fulfils its proper function it can be beautiful, but, however good looking, if it fails to do so then it cannot. Which is why some things, taken out of context, can lose their aesthetic appeal. In the case of industrial architecture, their job was not only to house industrial activity, but to proclaim to the world the industrial might of Victorian England. Which they did, magnificently.
I quite like the look of these machines.

Maybe that's just it. It's deliberate. Whether they're actually uglier than those Southern Railway Bullied 0-6-0s built during the war is a matter of opinion, but not much else comes close.
