I wonder if it would look better in BR Blue with full yellow ends? I think putting those wavy lines in the Freightliner colourscheme are totally wrong for the design, and make it look worse than it actually does?

Remember to wrap it up well otherwise it'll leak out of the wrapping paper and the postie will get his strides wet!;)

Back on topic, have any 70s been to Southampton Freightliner Terminal yet? In a few months they'll work a few intermodals from there I guess, unless Freightliner has other ideas.

I was under the impression the first 30 were for the Heavy Haul division...can't remember where I heard that, though!

I do love it how people have jumped straight onto the band wagon of saying (god there ugly keep them away from me) these are fine machines that I promise will actually make a difference to this dismal collection of locomotives running on our rails of which the majority are.........

1.too old
2.rehashed versions of old models
3.taken out the box way to early and lack in design

These on the other hand are ugly due to the fact they actually went for a little more substance then style.Dont get me wrong I love our old locomotives but Ill agree (with exceptions) that they are old and barely do their jobs these days.

Nonsense. They are ugly because they are badly designed, at least cosmetically. They may well prove to great machines in service, but I don't want to judge that until it's proven. None of the dissenters has criticised these hideous machines on any grounds other than that they are hideous. It's not a 'band wagon' BTW, it's people's real opinions AFAICS, arrived at independently.

As has been pointed out several times, there is no need for choice between style and substance. 66s are hardly stylish, but they aren't ugly either. A loco is not more 'substantial' just because it's ugly, and to suggest it is shows as much judging by appearance as those who object to its hideousness. It's disingenuous and a form of inverted snobbery to suggest that appearance simply doesn't matter, or worse that a well-designed loco is in some way lacking in 'substance', whatever that may mean.

Aye. I really don't undertand why a more sculpted fairing couldn't have been applied to the front of the loco.

GE have a fine reputation for building locomotives and as I understand it now sell more in North America than GM do.

There is a difference between functionality and elegance in the design of most things, and it is a shame that, to what appears to be a sizeable majority, the Class 70s have a less than appealing outline.

That said I remember the first time aerodynamically designed cars like the Sierra and the Astra arrived and compared to what we were used to, they were originally concieved as being truly awful. They did however grow on people over time, as I am sure the Class 70s will.

As for the functionality of the locomotive , I have no doubt that like all its stablemates, it will perform very well indeed.

Personally I feel the frontal design of the Class 70 is an opportunity lost.

Ran as far as Walsall at lunchtime after some problems morning. What with class 37,s having their air horns moved to the bonnett and the odd looking class 70 looks like Chuggington and Underground
Ernie are taking over the rail network

True and i fully agree...But Where GE Went wrong with these FUGLYS...Is the Whole cab...Chop it off and redesign it...then i might change my mind...

Funny how the good old workhorses that are the 66s now look even more attractive than these things...

And going back to the real reason why these were orferd in the first place...All came about due to a row between Frightliner and EMD over parts...so what better idea to do when your having problems with your biggest loco builder...Well, why not backstab them and go to another Loco Builder...

As for DBS mooving the Class 37 Horns to the front of the bonnet...Any idea on why such a thing has happend...They do look slightly on the odder side...not much difference though...its still a 37...

Indeed, Old Chap, indeed.

U-Boats, splendid machines !

Not so keen on the Dash 9s I have to say but that is down to cab design really.

Here is a shot from the drivers seat of a U30-C7 :D:D:D:D

The loco designers cannot win when it comes to railway enthusiasts, IMO.

I quite like the design of the 70 as it is different from the 66 and 67 which look as though they have been designed using a ruler from the side.

I am not saying I dislike the 66 or 67 but the 66 is an ugly thing and the 67 boring.

Anyway, that's my 2p worth.

Of course they can, all they have to do is design things well. Even relatively ugly locos like 66s or the earlier Irish GMs aren't in the same league as the class 70. This debate is as old as the hills, and it's not the case that railway enthusiasts simply dismiss everything new. I remember the disgust with which the early series 317/455/210 front end was received, a similar lack of attention to design. However, this was an era where BR were still capable of designing such masterpieces as the HST power car, the Mk III coach, class 90s etc. Or even, in a more low-key way, the PEP-derived stock. People aren't stupid or prejudiced about this, they simply have eyes and some idea of taste.

The biggest problem about this (and I paraphrase something I recently reread in an old edition of Modern Railways from about 1985), is that you still have to have a designer to design a bad loco front end. Just as much effort went into designing the 317 and now the class 70 cab as would have gone into designing something worthwhile. This very true observation totally wipes out the argument that the class 70 has more subtance than style, or that FOCs should not be interested in how a loco looks, as long as it performs.

I too remember the debate about the 317 styling, which I thought was functional and understated - I liked it. And then they tried to make it better, and produced the bastardisation on the 318s and later 455s which completely (IMHO) lost the basic proportions. And, I suppose, it's that "IMHO" that is key. I think the look of the 70s is more appealing than 50s, 55s, 66s or 67s, but there will be plenty who disagree. I think the form and the function have been married quite well, and the overall impression is of a powerful working machine. Perhaps i shall change my mind when I see one in the flesh (I see they are to be based at Leeds eventually).

Well, of course you're right that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there does with locomotives, as with anything, seem to be a concensus. Take MPs for example. Most people think that Caroline Flint (phwoooaaarr!) is a fox, and likewise most people think Ann Widdecombe is less so. However this doesn't rule out that possibility that certain individuals could think that Ms Widdecombe is the more attractive. These people would, however, be swimming against the tide, and running the risk of public derision.

I put it to this thread that Ann Widdecombe is a class 70, whereas Caroline Flint is a class 40. Obviously no MP could ever be compared to a Deltic!

Lawley St is the Freightliner Terminal in Birmingham situated on the Up (East) side of the main line to Euston, next door to Saltley PBS and opposite Saltley depot on the Derby lines.

70001 will be there for a little while yet

Some good GE action on there, Old Boy ! Thanks !

Like to see one of those babies on 6M00 Humber OR to Kingsbury tanks !

or on a tank train starting off at Bromsgrove climbing the Lickey.

A good site, I shall have to play about on it !

I wonder why they couldn't have given those 70s a front like this
