Another issue is that if you leave the platform open, you now have to keep watch on people who may be intending to jump. With a fence or barrier, anyone crossing would be easily spotted. Easier for platform staff or CCTV operators to look for.

It was temporarily fenced off due to the lift works, but I believe that's gone now.

Thanks, I wasn't imagining seeing that fence a few months ago.

Another example of a track having two platform faces is Ascot, where I believe a fence has been put up on the disused face. Guildford also has a disused platform (7), and one of the stations on the Barrow line

Ulverston. But while it isn't fenced, it also isn't signed, numbered and doesn't have a set of new PIS screens!

I bet it was similar to the contract to fit new signage to all Northern stations which resulted in Denton and Reddish South getting a set - the contract was just to fit PIS to all numbered platforms.

I suspect the Ascot services may have been the last slammers to use that track somewhere around 2004, as I think the WR DMUs on the Redhill line had been replaced by Turbos rather earlier.

Have posted this before - late WAT RDG trains often cross to the up line at Ascot, presumably to keep route knowledge and keep the points free.

In late 2015 or early 2016 I was on a down train which crossed over up line but which opened doors on the island platform side, which is no longer possible due to the fence. Need to check date.

Station staff advised me the fence is made of fibre glass not metal due to presence of the conductor rail in case someone stood on said rail grabbed hold of fence and made it live. Not entirely convinced, but seems plausible!

Yeovil Pen Mill is another.

Glass fibre reinforced plastic fences (link to supplier) are quite widely used on electrified sections of the railway. The platform extension at Shepreth in Cambridgeshire is backed by a plastic palisade fence - you wouldn't know it wasn't metal until you get up close to it.

At both platforms at Ascot, it is stated in the Route Knowledge Information that “doors to be released on the upside (Station building side) only.”
