What 3 car Class 150's do FGW have and what routes do they operate on?

Last time I saw the Severn Beach service last month, it was a normal 150/2. I was under the impression that these units do Cardiff - Paignton/ Plymouth/ Penzance workings, I think I've seen them on these before. I'm not 100% sure what diagrams they work in all honesty, but I didn't think it was Severn Beach.

Can't say I've noticed 3 car 150's in Cornwall. They may have been down a few times but are not regular's to Cornwall.

Just checked on TRUST, 150921 on Severn Beach services today along with 150221, no sign of 150927 in Bristol area.

921 & 927 also been noted on Cardiff-Portsmouth Harbour and Great Malvern-Brighton

Have a look on Google images

Yes, those were the other workings which I'd forgotten about, I knew there was something else! :p

The 150/9s are booked diagrams PM451 and PM452.

PM451 operates Severn Beach shuttles in the morning and also operates to Frome/Warminster and Great Malvern in the afternoon, then onto Cardiff in the evening.

PM452 works to/from Cardiff, and the trip to Paignton.

However at the moment it is rare for both 150/9s to be out, the reliability of both units has decreased dramatically since they become 3-car. Generally the Severn Beach diagram (PM451) will always be the 150/9 if only one is out, this is because 158/9s which would normally stand in cannot go to Avonmouth/Severn Beach because of current restrictions on platform 2 at Avonmouth.

However PM451 usually doesn't end up doing the evening Cardiff run. Usually a 158/9 does it. That balances the diagrams so that the 150/9 can go back on PM451 in the morning.

When I was on hols in Paignton recently, the 12:48 to Cardiff was a 150/9 every day that I saw it (including the day that I caught it back to TM). Is that the PM452 diagram then?

Yes. The other one being Severn Beach am followed Bristol/Frome/Great Malvern/Bristol later on as a poster has already stated. They do appear on Portsmouths and Brightons from time to time which, if no 3 Car 158 available, is better than a 2 Car Set on these routes.

I was on holiday in Teignmouth for the first 2 weeks in July and the day we got there 150921 was being taken on to Exeter Depot as it failed on arrival at St Davids, and every day after for the whole 2 weeks it was mainly operated by class 158/9s or class 150/153. 150927 was any at works when i was down for mods.

A mate of mine is a manager for FGW and the reliability of the units like said previously is not good.

I wonder why this is the case now? London Midland used its hybrid 150s (Featuring the self same two 150/2 vehicles now incorporated into 150921 and 150927 of course) very intensively and rarely seemed to encounter any problems as far as I could tell.

A 158/9 appeared on the Cardiff - Paignton - Cardiff run today. Jumped on it today at Newton Abbot at around 11:44 on the way to PGN

FGW do diagram for 100% availability from the 150/9 fleet though so the trains look unreliable quite easily.

I really wish they'd stop using these awful things on such long runs. Brighton to GMV or Paignton to Cardiff are 4-6 hour journeys!

I shouldn't think any people hardly would be making end to end journeys. Cardiff to Paignton is mostly a collection of local journeys.

I seem to keep finding myself on 150's for 2 hour journeys of late where a year or more ago it would always be a 158, a far more suitable unit.

There are hardly any 158s on FGW, anyway, over and above the requirements on the Portsmouth/Brighton routes and 2 X 2 Coach Units.

You'd be surprised. FGW offer cheap advance purchase tickets on the longer distance services ran by 150s such as Cardiff-Paignton, Cardiff-Plymouth and Penzance-Cardiff and you do get people using them. The Bristol-Brighton service is a long established regional route, and it is well used. The Brighton services are booked for Class 158s though.

I did just that coming back from hols. I got Paignton - Bristol for a piddling £6 and £3 advance singles for me and my son on the 12:48 ex Paignton. Half an hour longer than local + voyager but a fraction of the price.

Ive been hearing that First Great Western will be hiring a 3 car SWT 159 for the Cardiff Central to Paignton Service and that the SWT 158 that currently works on the Cheltenham Spa - Swindon shuttles will be a normal fgw unit
