No way 170's, they have to have there exterior steps removed to operate in some of the places
Hmm Doubt that Jim 171s can work most of the Southern Main Line Network.
Class 170s dont have selective door opening so have generally not been used on trains with portion working in their diagrams. (171s do) Whilst they have never been cleared for BTM I dont think they wouldnt fit. Certainly the coastway route to brighton needed platform alterations to accept 158/9s but no work to accept 170s.Well, explain to me why else 170's weren't cleared on the Salisbury - BTM line but they were on Exeter and west of Exeter ECS only!
Well they could get 170s if there staple boards are removed, it could be a prospect for new 171s to replace the 180s.

Trains can't run in passenger service unless they have step plates...

Would that not require serious modification of the units in question, and a new safety case for the? As well as creating a new subclass....
