Is there actually any obligation to finish the outward journey before starting the return journey?

Depends what you mean.

Presuming a ticket allows break of journey then you might never 'finish' your journey, in that you might never go to your ticket destination. So in that case the answer is 'yes'.

Can you break your journey, use the return, then at some later point use the 'rest' of your outward ticket? No, I don't think so.

As I said above there is no obligation to use the outward portion of a return and as others have pointed out the only stipulation is that you can not use the outward portion after you have started using the return.

Quite, they might have thrown it away (or not if they are fiddling the system) as they are entitled to do.

You're not entitled to throw away the return half of an SOR if you plan to use (or continue using) the outbound half.

Your return ticket is only valid with a stamped outward portion.
Think you have got it wrong way round in your head Outward portion of ticket is only valid if they can produce the corresponding Return portion of the ticket, used to be old fav of mine from when open tickets where valid for 30 days to ask for return part as you would expect person travelling on outward that was 28 days old to be able to produce the return part:oops: when starting their journey.

This came in with the facebook craze - an FCC employee allegedly received threatening facebook messages - can understand the concern sadly.
Don't give out personal & sensitive information out on facebook, personally I would never want to join a club that would have me as a member:lol:

However, in this case, the OP was talking about someone finding that FCC member of staff on Facebook, due to them having their full name visible, and then sending them abusive messages, you don't have to be "friends" with someone on Facebook to send them messages (although I'm sure this can be changed in the privacy settings)

Of course simply having a badge number clearly on display, as just about any other type of officer with the powers to stop and question you do, would easily solve this kind of problem.

Can't see it happening though. While I'm sure plenty of the inspectors are professional and treat their paying customers with respect, there's enough of the other sort around who use this one sided anonymity to their advantage.

I've not yet been on the receiving end of a fine or caution as I travel with an annually renewed travelcard, even so though, it's become noticeable that the gangs of inspectors hanging around the top of Moorgate have become more aggressive and unpleasant over the last few months. It's one thing assuming customers are criminals until they can prove otherwise, but another when you start to treat them that way.

On the receiving end of this, you start to find yourself making certain assumptions yourself. As soon as I see someone in that uniform now, I bristle, even though I know I'm traveling on a valid travelcard. The end result is that it breeds a very confrontational relationship between regular paying customers and FCC... but then I guess they could care less.

Some staff do seem to be rather desperate to do people, and given how I've seen them bragging about how much they 'got' on a service (as they change at Finsbury Park), even high fiving each other for beating their previous records - I guess that whether or not they have targets or commission (I don't think they have either), there's a definite desire to compete with each other..

That is why they'll perhaps issue invalid PFs to people and say the classic line they use 'Take this now, and you can appeal within 28 days' as a way to get people to stop kicking up a fuss, then have to waste time to appeal which they most likely would lose as they accepted the PF in the first place.

If all PFs were legit, it would be fine. A motivated work force finding those who fail to pay, or upgrade to first class illegally etc.. but if they then get so carried away that they harass people with legitimate tickets (like myself) then something needs to be done. Getting staff to display even their name badge seems to be the very least FCC can do.

(On the flip side, there was a FCC employee this morning having a go at a coffee seller for swearing saying there were customers about.. so some people do have pride still).

I am sure management are very happy to see RPIs being 'enthusiastic' as I think they'd probably put it.

Some really do get a kick, and seem to be dead keen to work the train that leaves Potters Bar at 0931 but is a 'peak train'. I wonder if they give PFs even when they're only supposed to excess?
