What Magazines do you get and what's your favourite?

Of the choices available, I nailed my flag to Traction. None of them are what railway mags once were - anyone remember Modern Railways Pictorial?:cry:

Rail Express is my favourite, but seeing as that option isn't available, I've put my support behind The Railway Magazine, which runs it a close second: It's got a good range of coverage of different aspects of railways.

Saw a list once and there were like 25 railway publications, all apart from Rail and Modern Railways with the kind of circulation your local newspaper laughs at.

If anything choice is good for the reader, but diversity is killing the market financially.

I usually read The Railway Magazine and Steam Railway out of those in the list above. However, I also often buy Modern Railways, principally for Roger Ford's excellent 'Informed Sources' section.

Definitely The Railway Magazine due to the breadth of its content. I also read RAIL from time to time to keep up with developments in the rail industry.

Railway magazine I get on subscription as it gives a good overview of rail matters. Steam Railway and 'Heritage' I buy occasionally.

Oddly, the latter two don't offer good deals for getting a subscription (unless you use direct debit, which I won't touch) which must lose them loads of business (mine, for a start, as I only buy those occasionally but would get every copy if I had a subscription). Are they commercially naive?

Railway Magazine does do a good deal for taking out a subscription. Another reason I subcribe to it.

I subscribe to The Railway Magazine (October edition delivered by the postie this morning ironically) and I also often pick up a copy Rail once a fortnight as my local supermarket stocks it. I am a very recent addition to the readership of both of these titles and so far I'm impressed with the variety of content in both.

Poor Modern Railways, not even worth of the survey! Although if Roger Ford left they may lose quite a few readers with him!

I think the Rail magazine is far to expensive for prescription, I buy The Railway Magazine

I used to subscribe to New Scientist, thats over £130 nowadays!
Rail at £85 seems fair for 26 issues a year.

Though I admit to reading Rail cover to cover in the station WH Smiths while waiting for my train more often than buying it :P
Only takes 10 minutes if you dont read the fleet movements in detail. Guess im a fast reader.

Interestingly today Railnews (business side focused rail magazine) has announced a free monthly pdf version to alternate fortnightly with their existing monthly print version.

Rail was very useful in the 1980s (when it was called Rail Enthusiast) for spotters as it had the best info on depot allocation transfers. It also had the brilliant and hilarious Railtour Review column written by David Maxey (why can't we have more writing like his in railway magazines?).

Now it's a bit of a rag TBH.

I buy all of the following titles, RAIL, The Railway Magazine, Railways Illustrated, Today's Railways UK, & Rail Express. I personally like them all due to the variety provided in terms of articles in each of the titles. If pushed, I would have to say my no 1 would be Today's Railways UK. Reading the last page of the magazine titled 'Grumpy old man' is paticuarly amusing. If you want honest, Peter Fox (Grumpy old man) is the person for you!

It is not on the list because I was not aware of it, see I am fairly fresh to the interest and the ones I have listed are the only ones I know but I will look this one up.

My Dad has boxes of Railway Mags from the 1960s - 1980s, a lot of them are Railway World I seem to remember. Has anyone ever had an old collection valued? He's mentioned doing it, but doesn't seem to think they'll be worth much.

People reading this thread may be interested to know that Mortons Media (who publish Heritage Railway and also bought Rail Express a couple of months ago) are also taking over Railway Magazine. Incidentally there is now an 'i-pad' version of Rail Express available, at £18 for 12 issues.

think i saw him once on Blackburn station, 3rd Oct 2009, on the Oldham loper farewell tour. Was going to go up and ask for his autograph (!?) but bottled it. I regretted it ever day since. But back on topic, i noticed rail getting more business orientated recently...
