Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong section. Does anyone know why the footbridge from the original LT entrance that goes over the Thameslink lines at Farringdon was doubled in width given that it now doesn't go to the platforms? Is there some future master plan that I am not aware of?

Isn't the effect just to divert the normal flows to and from the Thameslink platforms to the other entrances and exits?

In the presence of Crossrail, it's all about where the interchange flows go. The eventual increase in Crossrail <> LU flows is yet to be seen - they may have decided there's no room for a flow between Thameslink and the street going through the LU ticket hall as well so they've removed the option.

Can't think of any online explanations or drawings though.

The entrance to Crossrail is on the Thameslink side of the road plus direct link to northbound platform 4.

Old concourse was expanded to provide for extra capacity.

This NR media video on YouTube gives fairly good idea of how the Thameslink/LU Station will look when complete.

The existing concourse will give access to the LU platforms and link to the new Turnmill Street concourse.
The Western entrance for Crossrail will be from the Thameslink ticket hall.
The Eastern entrance for Crossrail is being built in Lindsey Street at the Western end of Barbican LU Station.

This is my original point - I can't see what capacity issues are solved by doubling the width of a bridge that goes nowhere! I guess I'll just have to wait and see what, if anything, happens.

Because of the amount of people who like to stand around the barriers creates pinch points. More space means better flows.

Another perfectly sound reason for extending the existing LU concourse towards the north is to provide a decent waiting area for the new lift. The lift shaft position will have been determined by the space available or needed at both the upper and lower landings - if it was decided to build out that far for space reasons on the platfom, the easiest solution would then be to square it off across the whole width of the trainshed.

The stairs down to the northbound Thameslink platform weren't really adequate by modern standards IIRC, have they even left them available for emergency use?
