Not the drivers fault it's late. By packing it full he's just trying to save you and others the inconvenience of waiting even longer for a bus. And he's probably miserable because he's now sick to the back teeth of everybody moaning at him that he's late, when there's a good chance that he's actually on time and it's a case of the previous bus(es) not running or running that late that they're behind him.

Going OT, but I'm sorry the driver is the face of the company and is the only person you see and having a driver shrugging their shoulders at you and saying "not my fault you've been waiting x amount of time, i'm on time" isn't exactly helpful.

I pay good money by DD every month for the service and quite frankly it's very poor, so much so I've started a spreadsheet to record how long I'm waiting each day for a service that's supposed to be very 10 minutes.

Contact customer services and complain then. That way something might actually get done about it. Taking it out on the driver achieves nothing. Zilch. Zero. There isn't a magic button in the cab that you can press to make everything run smoothly.

Please dont bring common sense into threads like this!;)

Everyone knows its the drivers fault that the 2 previous buses were cancelled dont they.

What I used to do with the "why are you late" lot was turn the engine off, get off the bus and say "okay now I will answer your questions", because answering the same question 20 times just means the bus sits there getting later, which helps no-one, but hey some people think they are important dont they.

Unless the member of staff involved has directly caused the problem by some sort of negligence or stupid action you've witnessed I've never understood why taking things out on staff seems like the right answer to anyones problem. The bus driver isn't late because he stopped for a McDonalds. The train isn't cancelled because the the train manager on the subsequent train asked for it to be for a laugh. The line isn't closed becuase the platform staff thought it would be amusing.

Many of the issues on the bus/rail networks ARE caused by incompetence somewhere along the line but never normally with the poor people who take the brunt of the abuse!

And not always by the network either. For example, a number of delays are caused by passengers holding the doors open for their mate (even for a few seconds) or forcing them back open so they can get on. When this happens somewhere like London Bridge, where there's hardly any slack, you would not believe how much it can knock on.

Even Pacers still have their advantages over actual road buses. For sure, the interior environment is basically just a bus

They had bus interiors when they were built.

But bus interiors have developed in the past twenty five years - you get very few buses with bench seats these days (my local route is one of the few to still have them) - you generally get a vehicle accessible for wheelchairs/ pushchairs, wifi is becoming more common on modern buses, even leather seats... buses have moved on in the past twenty five years (even if some Pacers haven't).

You'd hope that some of them might be inspired to make it to the cubicle !

Even if they make it to the cubicle there is no guarantee their aim will be accurate and it doesnt matter what "number" they are doing!

I would say that from all the toilets out of use on my trains 25% are from "passenger action" either missed opportunities or blocking the pan before using it and 75% are defective.

To be fair, some Pacers have had refurbs, too. I actually find the seating on Northern's 142s to be superior to their 150s (or, at least the 150s I've experienced.) Admittedly, it's still 3+2, but that's par for the course. But you're quite right, many buses (in particular the ones I commute to/from work on) are much better than any Pacer I've ridden.

Hang on. 455s have toilets now? When did that happen? I could've sworn they didn't... Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me again.

I work Desiros and 458s as well, I was hoping that people reading that post would be able to work out that I was referring to toilet fitted stock, obviously some people need everything writing down for them!

Bah, fair enough! The thought didn't cross my mind that you might sign other traction. I follow a chap on Twitter who only signs 455s, so without really thinking much about it, I guess I just assumed you were the same.

On the Desiro front, do you sign 444, 450 or both? If you drive 444s, maybe you've given me a lift into London once or twice! :)

As an example of why people get a tad upset at season ticket rises can be seen on my own line. My season ticket will be £652 for a two stop, one change, 15 minute journey. That is up from £624 last year and c.£575 the year before. By comparison an anytime return costs £6.40. A 12 month London zones 1-6 season ticket is £5,372.00.

On the face of it that seems quite a bit for a short trundle to work. Add to this the fact that the service tends to break down on a worryingly frequent basis, for various reasons ranging from a lack of drivers through a failed units to infrastructure failure and all stations in between. Only OHLE failures are omitted and that is just because we don’t have any! Actually I am surprised the TOC doesn’t try that one to and hope no one notices!

Because of the varied failures the service is replaced by a bus at least 3 or 4 times a month. Most often this is because the units have failed in some way. The timetable is very poorly set out and seems to be designed to just miss London connections at each end particularly in the peak periods. A more cynical person may think this was done on purpose. This infuriates people and drives them away from the train. This is a line that should be busy and popular as it runs through affluent commuter territory and connects with three different TOC London services at end of the line but isn’t because of the poor timetable and service. Bear in mind that this is an almost self contained branch line with little or no conflict with other services.

However because of all the problems potential passengers take the view that the service can not be relied on and right now I agree! The replacement bus service is widely unpredictable ranging from massively early to simply not turning up at all or my own personal favourite simply missing stations out because the driver cant be bothered or doesn’t know where they are! I bet the TOC makes a decent profit on any cancelled trains as they don’t have to compensate us passengers and receive compensation from NR. Perhaps the most ironic thing about this is that a bus operator runs the trains but cant run a bus service!

The trains, when they do run, are old and in a poor internal state. The seats are basically life expired (or finished as it used to be known) and are uncomfortable and have been for several years. The units seem to maintained only enough to keep the failures to a level just below embarrassing and they are often low on poor and sound rough as a badgers but they have had a nice external paint job so that is ok!

Time keeping is slack at the best of times I think due to it being a country line run by machines constantly on the point of failure. The staff are a pretty decent bunch and seem to be the best thing about the current operator. They deal with the many problems with humour and a refreshing, blunt honesty and frankly keep the show on the road (when there is a driver!  ). The TOC in my opinion don’t care and don’t want to run the service but I am sure they gleefully gobble up the subsidy offered and any fares we give them.

Passengers see no obvious improvements in their service yet are called on to pay more and more. It matters not a jot to the average passenger that there are new signals or new track layouts. Most don’t even connect fare revenue with track works. They simply see a failing service costing them more and more each year for little in return. The more astute may recognise the vague jam tomorrow promises but most want to know where there money goes. The majority think, perhaps rightly, that it goes to swell TOC profits rather than improving services. They look at what the TOC offers them and jump to that conclusion very quickly because what the TOC offers them is basically rubbish and sweepings from their table.

I do sign them both, they are classed as one type of traction, but only drive 444s very occasionally, you never know though, I might have been your chauffeur on the odd occasion!

I commute to work by bus in Southampton, and the vast majority of the bus drivers are polite and friendly people. It's rare indeed for me to meet a grumpy one. In fact, it's probably been a number of years since I've had any gripe with a driver.

As a coach driver myself, I'm probably overly critical and my main issue with buses is the variability in the driving. I've been on too many trips where drivers have braked harshly due to their lack of anticipating hazards and breaking the speed limit.
