Fare Evasion Advice Needed

Thank you for the advice. I asked the inspector what happens next after he gave me the slip. He suggested they will write me but likely that I will pay a penalty fee and the outstanding. I was checking online, if there has been incidents that went to court. Are you aware of any? I'm really worried.

A search of local newspapers will show lots of railway fare evasion cases. On the other hand this forum shows many cases where out of court settlements have been negotiated, especially with GTR. The issue for you is this is not a one-off, you've been evading your fares on an industrial scale which many would say should result in a court appearance and criminal record.

When you say single anytime fare, don't you mean open return fare since the person has to come back to starting station?

If they want to be particularly punititive they could use the Anytime Single fare (£31.70) in both directions as this is more expensive than the Anytime Day Return (£50.50)

No. @fandroid means what they have said. Although they have been around for a very long time indeed, return tickets are essentially a special offer for people making return trips. On the basis of what you have told us, you didn't take advantage of the railway's generosity in offering return tickets, so they won't see any need to offer that generosity again now.

And it's worth remembering that if you are offered a settlement, the railway is in a strong position: if you don't accept the settlement they will be able to prosecute you - and on the basis of what you have told us, they will win.

They'll certainly want paying for both directions of travel, however it's calculated. We normally warn people to expect them to calculate it as a series of individual journeys on single tickets.

Using normal contactless card through underground.

Where were you touching in to start your contactless journey, the stand alone validators inside the Farringdon gateline? I assume TfL have not spotted any irregularities, or they’d have blocked your contactless card.

And why should the TOC ever accept less than the OP should have paid? In that win-win situation for the passenger, nobody would ever pay the full fare. I note that a six month season ticket for this journey is over £3000.

GTR have both uniformed ticket inspectors and plain-clothed fraud investigation officers. Seems it was the fraud ones that stopped you, given the fact they mentioned monitoring you on previous trips, as well as having a record of your dodgy journeys.

There's a good chance of you being offered a settlement, as long as you respond promptly when contacted and cooperate fully. Good luck.

If you're willing to share any details (not your name or address!) with us, that would help us when other people ask for help. Things like
- how much did the solicitor cost?
- did you have to make any payment to the railway on top of that?
- how quickly did it resolve things?
- did you need to go to court/interact with the railway except through your solicitor? (I'm guessing the answer to these is 'no', but you never know...)
- it sounds like you were pleased with the solicitor - which firm were they?
