Hi booked a ticket for my gf from MAN Airport to York for 20th March 8.25pm (done this route many times never had this ticket issue)
paid for 1st class ticket .

When I got the E-tickets its states on the ticket
MAN Airport To Staylybridge -
then second ticket saying Staylybridge - York
No problem I though even though I have never changed on this route at staylybridge ever.

Then went back to check on the Trainline site
and the 8.25pm to York on the 20th March clearly states 8.25pm Man Airpot 20:43 Manchester Piccadilly then change At Man Picc to York

my 2 tickets clearly state
MAN AIRPORT STAYLYBRIDGE
then second ticket
STAYLYBRIDGE YORK
(with instruction to change at Staylybridge)

So I called the Train line (offshore call centre)
to be told dont worry as you have a split saver ticket, ignore the change written on the ticket and change at MAN PICC
and get the next train to YORK from there - do not change at Staylybridge. I tried to ask why the ticket clearly says something different from the website
he said dont worry its just so you can get a split saver ticket and it wont be questioned when changing trains or getting the ticket inspected.

So I then thought about it and called again - only to be given the same answer.

this sounds confusing and kind of wrong. I dont want my GF being offloaded from the train or having to pay for a new fare
the staff on the trainline either have it right or they dont but the ticket is showing wrong information unless this is the way split save works

can anyone advise on this ?

many thanks Dex

You've been sold a combination of tickets because it is cheaper than a through ticket.

A ticket from Manchester Airport to Staylbridge (change at Piccadilly) and a ticket from Staylebridge to York is cheaper than a ticket from Manchester Airport to York.

There is no need to alight at Staylbridge, the only requirement is that the train must call at the station where you change from one ticket to another. The train from Piccadilly to York calls at Staylbridge.

For the future, if you book with the forum's ticketing site, split ticket PDFs will be accompanied by a guide for how to use your tickets alongside your itinerary.

Yes, I recommend booking with us; we often find cheaper combinations of tickets than Trainline (there is an option to turn splits off if you don't want them) and we don't charge a booking fee.

There is also a free seat selector, if you may find that useful.

There's no forum app, but the TrainSplit app will find the same tickets but, of course, not help to support the forum's running costs.

One potential downside to splitting at Stalybridge...

What type of tickets do you have ?

An Airport advance to York would allow you to travel up to 3 hours later if your plane was delayed.

There are no airport advances from Stalybridge. So if your plane is late and you hold Advance tickets you’re stuck with the trains you picked

If the origin of the first ticket is Airport Advance, there is no issue.

It's only a potential problem if the first ticket is a walk up ticket and the second is an advance.

The OP may well have bought an Advance for the 2nd leg. We don't know as they haven't said.

Thanks all it did work out although Thetrainline app /company did not make it clear - so just stayed on train from MAN AIRPORT TO MAN PICC
changed - and got direct to York no issues.
But thetrainline tickets clearly stated change at Stayley bridge which I knew was wrong, anyone its done and my tickets now booked through the app on this site
much easier (and no booking fees!) just booked a couple of tickets to Scotland for next month all good.

Thanks for updating us. It's probably worth considering using our own ticketing site in future, the journey detail is very clear and we have a more sophisticated split ticketing system than Trainline!

The OP doesn't say whether they had booked semi-flexible tickets or advance tickets, but let's assume they were the former. Seems that they were 1st class tickets.

Departure at 2025 from Manchester Airport on Thursday 20 March 2025 would have been a TfW service bound for Chester arriving at Manchester Piccadilly (platform 14) at 2043.

The onward TPE service from Manchester Piccadilly to York, calling at Stalybridge, most likely would have been the 2100 departure from Manchester Piccadilly (platform 1), calling Stalybridge at 2112/2113 and eventually arriving York at 2241.

To travel first class, an Anytime 1st Day Single from Manchester Airport to Stalybridge priced at £10.30 and another from Stalybridge to York at £52.20 would have sufficed. Total = £62.50.

Alternatively, an Anytime 1st Day Single from Manchester Airport direct to York is available but that costs £66.20. This could be used on a service which doesn't call at Stalybridge, as there are sometimes direct/quicker services (to York) from Manchester Airport which go via Manchester Piccadilly and then Manchester Victoria, but don't think these were actually operating last Thursday.

Therefore, the ticket split via Stalybridge likely saved £3.70 (ignoring the impact of fees, etc.) and the OP's friend would almost certainly have ended up travelling on a train calling at Stalybridge, albeit with no need to alight/reboard there.

Where do you get that information from ?
As a special concession customers with an Airport Advance ticket, with an origin of Manchester Airport or Lpool Airport Bus, if their flight is delayed, will be allowed to travel on the next TransPennine Express service to their destination. This concession is available for up to 3 hours after the departure time of their original service or if the next service to their destination is timed to depart more than 3 hours after the original departure time they may use this service.
The origin must be Manchester Airport (or Lpool Airport Bus - not applicable to this discussion) and travel is permitted to the destination.

Passengers may use two or more tickets for one journey to their destination.
