He qualifies for the passport based on his mother being Irish. He wouldn't have needed to lie about that to the Irish passport authorities, but he probably did lie about his country of birth to Canada in the hope his dodgy history wouldn't be flagged.
Canada isn't like Europe, where up to now UK/Eire > EU travel has required no or little profiling, Canada is like the USA and anyone with a "record" simply won't get in, or at least have some real explaining to do. Makes me wonder why he tried to get in at all??

When the Olympics is in the USA in 2028, wonder if any convicted athletes will be allowed entry? But that's another discussion, I'm sure here the Irish will be turning every page in order to remove his passport from him, even a technicality.

So that he can tell all his hard of thinking followers that he is a victim.

You can get into Canada with a "record", and it is not difficult to avoid detection at the border. They do not have immediate access to foreign criminal records that suddenly bleep red when you approach them or your name gets entered into the computer, unless you are on a high profile banned list.

Surely some kind of form has to be filled in to allow you visa-free access?? If so can you write "no offences" and get through, even though you have?? Seems a bit lax!

Never attempted to enter Canada - so don't know the protocols, I'd like to though one day.

Well, yeah.

If you're a major criminal, a terrorist or someone on the no-fly list, your name will likely be picked up by the first immigration officer you speak to. But if you have some less high profile conviction - like maybe affray, in England, or some mortgage fraud - then no, they won't know about it at all - unless they put you in secondary screening and only then, if they really do smell a rat, can they pull your criminal history, and see if you've lied on the form.

I have a friend with a somewhat chequered history who has made numerous trips to the States and Aus thrown in and has never declared them and has had no problems entering. He has never been on any banned list so will never come to the attention of foreign immigration officials.

Don't think I'd try it on, if found then you cancel your chances of getting into Europe! But point being, if you are high-profile even with low-profile offences, it's a bit stupid especially if the first thing you say is a lie. To be fair, I doubt Canadian authorities would be aware of his background unless tipped off.

I can't believe they didn't know anything about him in this age of intelligence sharing, even though it was an Irish rather than U.K. passport used to gain entry. The more that is revealed about Yaxley-Lennon's past, even the most recent events, the more I reckon he's led a remarkably charmed life, untrammeled by so many incidents which might have brought the less 'lucky' to be held to account big time. I've a feeling a lot more may come out about his past connections with people of influence, be they politicians, policemen, or other authority figures in the judicial or tax field.

I would expect they would, not least for his history of being banned from travelling to the US, yet still going there on someone else's passport and ending up being jailed for it.

Stabbing in Leicester Square. Information unclear right now, but Tommy Robinson has already got things going.

Nigel Farage is presumably unfolding his flags before he speaks to the nation.
If it is confirmed that the attacker is white then the likes of Yaxley-Lennon will move on to their next stirring of hate.
Indeed it has:

Left: A 32 year old (white) man has been arrested for stabbing an 11 year old girl and a 34 year old woman in Leicester square, London Right: A (brown) recent immigrant to the UK (based on his accent), working as a security guard, "I saw that he was stabbing the kid, I jumped on him, held down his hand in which he had a knife, held him down and kicked the knife away from him" "I just saw a kid who was getting stabbed and I just like tried to save her" This man, Abdullah, is a hero

Every time such a terrible incident occurs, Yaxley-Lennon will no doubt be desperately hoping the attacker isn't white. That said, if it turns out they are from somewhere like Eastern Europe, he would no doubt still kick off about that (even though it wouldnt quite suit his Islamophobic rhetoric).

Will we see an apology from Yaxley-Lennon, I wonder? (I'm not going to go looking at his Tweets to find out; it's a rhetorical question anyway, as I am sure we all know the answer!)

As for the individual who stepped in, he is an absolute hero. Whatever his skin colour, religion (if any), all of which is utterly irrelevant to any sane person.

Apparently some right winger is using the image and name of the hero to now spout misinformation on Twitter.
Yes it was noted that someone renamed an X account to claim to be the person who intervened and took down the attacker.

No doubt gaining a huge following and then using the account for their own gain or to push a narrative.

Aren't people learning how this works yet?!

I've only been twice, in 1994 and 2004 (plus airport transit in 2011) but in all cases I seem to remember a visa-waiver form rather like that of the US at the time.

One noticeable difference though is that the Canadian border guards were considerably more courteous and welcoming than their US counterparts.

Just a reminder to all that any post which makes reference to something from an external source, should have a hyperlink (if at all possible; if not, please contact us for advice) as well as a text quote (a screenshot can also be useful, but we do need text), in quote tags (using the quote button)

This should be in addition to, and separate from, your own comment.

Now seen a 13 year old girl pleading guilty:

A 13-year-old girl has pleaded guilty to threatening unlawful violence during a protest in Aldershot on 31 July.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted the offence following the protest outside Potters International Hotel.

She sat with her parents at the short hearing at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court.

District Judge Tim Pattinson ordered for a pre-sentence report to be made and adjourned the youngster’s sentencing to take place on 30 September.

I hope her parents sitting there take a long hard look at themselves as they will bear a huge amount of responsibility in this.

Canada can be tricky. About 8 years ago, I was twice stopped at Toronto Airport and accused of being there "for work". I was aware that this was a concern and explained that I was there "for meetings", that I worked for a global company and I was employed via the UK subsidiary. Both times I was let through after a 30-45 minute delay but after that my client (one of Canada's largest companies) gave me a "to whom it may concern" letter which stopped the problem. Haven't been back since COVID so don't know if it has changed.

A 32-year-old man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after an 11-year-old girl was stabbed in London’s Leicester Square on Monday.
Ioan Pintaru, a Romanian national with no fixed address, is also charged with possession of a bladed article.

Doubtless the anti-Eastern-European hate mob will be out in force.

All nonsense though, because a murder is a murder and people should not focus on the nationality and/or ethnicity. When people do, it just shows up their own racism and/or xenophobia. Some of the most high profile murders in the past 30 or 40 years were of course committed by white English people but the mob seem to conveniently forget this.

Yes, pretty much, although I believe the US and Canada do share data about offences. Canada in particular bars people from entry if they've had a drink driving conviction in the past, or even if they've been solely arrested on suspicion of it without being convicted.

Harsh, particularly the latter. Banning you from driving within Canada would be more appropriate (e.g. distributing a driving-ban list to car rental companies).

The aim is presumably to stop you drink-driving within Canada, so if they stop you driving full stop (but only driving, rather than entering the country), the problem goes away.

Longest prison sentences handed out so far over the UK riots.

"As of Wednesday, more than 1,024 people had been arrested, while 575 charges had been brought over days of rioting and disorder that followed the fatal stabbing of three young girls in Southport. Judge John Thackray KC, who sentenced Whiteley, has encouraged prosecutors to consider charging offenders who played central roles in the recent disorder with rioting, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. Violent disorder carries a maximum sentence of five years."

"A number of people have now been sentenced to three years over their part in the UK riots.

So far, three years is the longest sentence handed out, but if prosecutors consider charging offenders who played central roles in the recent disorder with rioting, sentences of up to 10 years could be handed out."

Three years?

Three years?
Are they dealing with people who pleaded not guilty yet? If not, then three years is either a half or two-thirds - I forget which - of the maximum sentence that would have been handed down had all those sentenced so far pleaded not guilty. That would come out as either four-and-a-half or six years, which is more reasonable, in my opinion.

One third discount for pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity. As noted the maximum sentence for violent disorder is five years, so if the sentence was 4.5 before that was applied then it’s close to the maximum.

I don’t think that they are dealing with those who are pleading not guilty yet: they are to be tried at a later date and are either in custody or on bail until then. These are being tried under the normal arrangements, which are mostly used for small town Saturday night incidents, when there is a guilty plea, no dispute over the facts and no need for lengthy investigations or reports.

As I remember, the earliest hearings for those pleading not guilty were adjourned to Crown Court to be heard late this month and early next month. Most were remanded in custody.

Absolutely. Nobody that's having a sentence handed down has been pleading not guilty. These are all the ones who are pleading guilty in front of the magistrates before being transferred to the Crown Court for sentencing (as Magistrates don't have the sufficient sentencing powers to be able to pass sentence themselves).

Worth noting that even the people who have been give dates for hearing later this month or early next month won't actually be the full court hearings either. It will be the arraignment where the charges are read out, the defendant enters their plea, and then (if they plead not guilty again) the judge will issue any case management direction and set a date for trial. If does go to a full hearing then these cases aren't getting dealt with until 2025, maybe later considering the backlog in the Crown Court at the moment. If they plead guilty then expect another flurry of sentences towards the middle/end of September.

That is exactly what Farage does, and he's very good at it. He will skirt so close to the line of things he definitely shouldn't be saying that it's blatantly obvious what he means without directly saying it.

That the abhorrent video of him being driven around in a chauffeured Roller the other day point out asylum hotels and immigration centres and basically saying that these people we're the problem. The bloke is a vile human and the day he disappears forever or thrown in jail will be one for celebration.

I feel awful saying it and I never wish harm on other people, but it makes me think of that poor plane all smashed to pieces, yet he wasn't.

Yaxley-Lennon is a coward and fled the country as soon as it looked like it was going to kick off.

He hid in the back of a shop in Sunderland when Celtic fans found out he'd came up to a pre season friendly between Sunderland and Celtic after he'd insulted Celtic several times

Featuring such hits as "Yes Sir, I Can Firebomb An Asylum Hotel", "I Will Always Hate You" and who could forget " We Will Deport You", and the all time classic "Men Just Want To Loot Greggs"!

Right Said Fred finally making a comeback to the charts with 'I'm Too Racist (for this country)'

He hardly came out of the plane crash unscathed. Punctured lung, broken ribs, fractured sternum, chipped vertebrae. I'm amazed he was able to walk away with those injuries.
