Hi All I need some advice, please . After passing DMI with Southern (GTR)for a trainee train driver role.Unfortunately, I failed the MMI in April ( This was my first attempt ).when I phoned for a feedback I have been told that I failed on " Verbal Communication " I thought I prepared well but I didn`t perform well enough and by the end of the interview I knew that I am failing it .Three months now since my interview and I am in such a bad mood and I can`t get over it .I was putting all my hopes on this opportunity to change my life for the better and get my dream job as I am sick from hopping from one job to the other .I am a former Bus driver and currently work in care.I am British-Egyptian moved to the Uk in 2005 I speak English fluently but to be honest sometimes I pronounce some words not right which happened during the MMI ,when I got my feedback I knew I failed because of that .On the other hand, i gave a great DMI which lasted over an hour and the interviewers were really happy with me.Now I keep blaming and beating myself and saying I should have done a mock interview in a recruitment agency but after passing DMI it gave me confidence that I will do well in the MMI .The 6 months will be up by the end of September and I am thinking to contact GTR to resit the MMI if they let me.but at the same time, iam scared that I will fail again with the "communication"aspect .Any advice would be much appreciated.

Never give up on this dream job, i passed stage 1 & 2 but failed the driver managers interview. Remember how well you have done to reach the MMI.
I am hoping to resit and pass too.

Hopefully, you will resit and pass soon. It is gut wrenching imagine if i passed the MMI next step would be the Medical

I think it is unlikely GTR will allow you to go straight back to the interview stage after six months, you will probably need to wait until they next advertise and apply again (although you can skip the tests you have already passed).

Yes, i have been down since failing the DMI, and to make things worse i passed it back in 2013! I would love to get to the medical stage and get the job.

Correct, you will only need to sit SJE and MMI, i passed 2nd time around but the pressure is on cos if you fail twice that is the end of the train driver dream. Until they decide to change tests again.

Unfortunately i truly believe that i have missed a very rare opportunity . And i don`t think it will happen in the near future maybe in a matter of years if it will happen .Anyway never mind gutted with me , i had a feeling from the beginning that is not gonna happen for me .

Don't give up, remember all the computer tests are valid for 5 years.
Just keep an eye out after 6 months are up and apply as soon as you see the vacancy. Like yourself i am hoping for another chance to pass the interview.
Cheers mate for the support . Which TOC u passed ur assessment with ?

There's no point getting too stressed about things - even though it's your dream job, only a small proportion get in.

This isn't to put you off applying, strive hard for your dreams but don't rely on getting through on a particular intake because numbers are against you on a good day.

As said above, you'll probably have to wait a wee while for the next intake to retake this part of the assessment.

It may however be worth enquiring about what level you failed, a lot of companies seem to apply the enhanced pass rates these days and if the toc you applied for is one of them you could try and find out if you met the naitonal standard. It wouldn't help you with regards to the opportunity you applied for, but if you had met this standard you wouldn't have lost anything by trying.

Communication can be broken down into a number of different areas such as clarity, listening, assertiveness, etc. Did they actually tell you anything more specific? In the interview itself, did they ask you to repeat anything or maybe reword the same question?

Mock interviews are better than nothing but you have to give them details about the job and the questions that you expect to be asked. Occasionally, the mock interviewer may surprise you by including a question from a different angle.

To my mind, there is no substitute for attending a variety of different interviews with real TOCs. There can only be so many ways of eliciting the same information.

Just had another thought:

In the MMI, you have to talk about how you handled an emergency situation. I would have thought communication would have been an integral part of that, describing locations, the situation, which emergency services are required and so forth.

If you can communicate effectively in a pressured situation, then there is no reason why you cannot do so in an MMI.

Cheers mate for your reply and advice .My MMI just went wrong and one mistake leads to other mistakes during the interview. On the contrary, I gave a good DMI and passed .

You are quite welcome. You want to try training to be a guard in the public eye. You get used to looking daft when you make a mistake in from of your trainer and the passengers. You just learn to brush it off.

Sorry to hear you failed the MMI Pop. You obviously have it in you to pass if you passed the DMI. Don't give up.

Do you or anyone else have any recent tips or possible questions to expect from GTR for a DMI that you would be willing to share (Or PM to me) please?

I have mine next week and although the MMI went well and I passed, I am pretty nervous about this one, being so close the end of the selection process.

Thanks in advance :)

During my DMI interview with TL I remember I was firstly asked what I knew about the company (it's part of Govia bla bla... - I wouldn't be surprised if some of the interviewees haven't got much to say about that). I remember one of the question was "tell me about a time when you achieve something as a part of a team" or something like that. I used my example of when I was part of a hockey team. Moreover, they asked me what my biggest achievement had been. Obviously, they also want to know why you are applying for that role and what you know about the role of train driver. My interviewers were OK, but I read in this forum that other TOCs, for example Southeastern, make the DMI interview a bit harder. However, I think with Southeastern the DMI is at the end of the process, after the MMI.

Show enthusiasm and convey motivation.

Good luck.

Thanks very much GMT, great info.
When did you do this if you don't mind me asking?

Think i'll just try and memorise some basic info about the company and try and have some examples for as many likely questions as I can.

I personally found the MMI quite relaxed and friendly.
Did you / have other people found the DMI to be more formal and serious compared to the MMI?

Thanks again :)

Easy for me to say but try not to worry mate. No point assuming things until you hear for sure. If you did it last week i'm pretty sure you will hear early next week.

I convinced myself that I failed the DFF on the first assessment day and that I failed the memory picture whatsit on the second one but I didn't.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes :D

That's what's keeping me going lol I thought I couldn't have passed the dials thing only answered half and yea the picture thing far too quick mind you I went out lines on joystick a bit I'm also hoping that if mmi went well then sjt not so important as in he is good enough perhaps the assessors can see beyond one or two imperfect sjt answers I certainly didn't put that I would turn a blind eye lol but cheers mate

Thanks again :)

End of September last year. I came across quite a few people saying that with GTR DMI was sort of informal. But don't underestimate it; every interviewer is different and also every interviewee is different in the way they present themselves.

I personally found the MMI, which I failed in October, quite draining. Not because it was difficult per se, but because I made it complicated. I chose a couple of not suitable answers, I didn't elaborate enough one of them, I used a couple of times the pronoun 'we' rather than 'I'. However, I think in life certain events are meant to be or to happen for you to understand, in this case, where you went wrong. I'm sure next time, if there is one, I'll be better equipped to answer the questions. Should I then fail agin, so be it, it meant I wasn't fit for it. We will see.

Did you know you failed for saying we and not elaborating for sure I'm not saying I know but surely everyone says we in some of my examples I was saying what I did but also I called for help so at some points said we I mean say an accident happened in front of you and you said I called ambulance and I checked the patient etc but if you helped the paramedics lift the patient wouldn't you say we lifted the patient on to a stretcher etc sometimes you have to say we even when talking about what you did

I suppose there are cases, even within certain examples, when you can use 'we'. In my case the interviewer said to me slightly irritated:"Why do you keep using we?". I apologised and carried on but the damage had already been done. When I asked for feedback about the outcome of my MMI I was told it was because of communications skills.
