Hi everyone,

I have a first class all line rover ticket which I have been using for the past week. The ink has faded to the point the QR code is no longer readable and the first class logo has to be squinted at to be seen. This is one of the bog roll tickets. I took it to my local station where I bought it from only to be told 'We cannot replace it' although I believe they just don't know how due to lack of training after all how often does one need a ticket re-printed? on LNWR's website they state if your ticket is faded or damaged you can return it to the station and get a replacement free of charge. If they cannot do it there where am I likely to have a chance of getting a replacement? I have also tried London Euston to no luck

Thanks for any advice

The repacement only applies to season tickets and Railcards. I'd take a photo while you can still read it.

Thanks for the advice, I have taken a photo the day I got it and luckily the QR code has been able to scan from the photo. I was told by a guard that it would be fine although he said some may be very picky and accuse of sharing a ticket. I would also like to keep it as a sort of sourvenir also but it would not be a very good one if it is just a blank ticket!

How long have you been in possession of this ticket? They don’t exactly fade quickly.

1 week, I've noticed it become weaker and weaker each day. The staff at Euston suggested it may be due to heat?

Annoyingly a guard also wrote the date in big numbers all over the front which interfered with some of the details on it

If it’s being kept in your pocket, or in a ticket wallet in your pocket, I’d recommend keeping it in a bag. The thermal printing on the bog roll tickets in my experience is particularly prone to fading from body heat.

Thanks for the advice, this is what the staff at Euston reccomended as well. Hopefully the weeks hot weather doeen't cause it to play up too

That's not correct. NRCoT condition 4.8 refers:
If a Ticket is damaged to the extent that it is not legible and cannot (where applicable) be scanned or otherwise validated, it will not be valid for travel. However, if you return it to the Train Company or Licensed Retailer that sold it to you, they will arrange for a replacement Ticket to be issued to you unless there is reason to suspect that it has, or will be, used for fraudulent or improper purposes. You may have to pay a reasonable administrative charge (not exceeding £10) for the replacement.

I had problems with the ink on the bog roll style tickets when using a 7 day regional rover. It was quite hot weather and I had been keeping it in one of those small plastic railcard holders with my railcard. I’d been using it in mainly rural areas where I hadn’t needed to take it out of the plastic wallet to pass through any barriers. After a couple of days when I did have to remove the ticket, it had obvious got a bit warm and sweaty under the plastic and some of the ink came off the ticket and was left stuck to the plastic.

There isn't any ink on the ticket.

Perhaps not, but in some way the printing from the ticket could be seen as a black imprint on the clear plastic of the wallet and the ticket became difficult to read. It definitely stuck to the inside of the plastic wallet and was difficult to remove without the print coming off.

Maybe but if people are going to jump up and down and scream evertime someone mentions a "fine" I reserve the right to do the same when someone mentions ink on a thermal ticket.

Clearly bog roll ticket isn't fit for purpose.
You haven't see a faded CCST railcard then?

My CCST Dales Railcard is due to expire this month, and is still crystal clear.

Ah, but has it been in your wallet for a year ?
I'm not sure what that's got to do with anything. Clearly not, why would it be? And what has your railcard got to do with anything - plenty of faded railcards are seen?

Another poster brought up railcards, and I merely pointed out that I have had several Network and Dales railcards over the years, none of which have ever faded to become unusable.

The fact that a bog roll ticket can become faded over one or two weeks continual use, suggests that the format is not fit for purpose.

But other people have a different experience, which surely demonstrates that CCST is not fit for purpose.

I've not heard of a CCST fading over the course of two weeks !
But other people have, so once again we're in the classic fallacy that your experience is representative of the whole. I've seen anecdotes before on these forums of booking offices using a toaster or a kettle to try and revive faded tickets.

Have they ? The only examples cited have been of season tickets, which are likely to be annual.

Kept the return portion of an off peak return in my wallet for about a month - nowhere near unreadable but it's definitely past its prime.

The outward portion visibly deteriorated just on the journey alone, after going through various sets of barriers and being in my pocket.

Printed at a greater anglia machine - so maybe there's a difference in the quality of the stock or the way it is thermally printed?

More dancing on the head of a pin - as @Watershed notes, a ticket which has become unreadable can be replaced and that should have happened at the OP's "local station".

Thermal printing does have its disadvantages and one is that it's susceptible to heat. A very hot week and keeping it on your person might fade it quite quickly.

What's the ticket been printed on? Presumably it was CCST (= credit card sized ticket) rather than "bog roll"?

Not the “local station” but the “Train Company or Licensed Retailer that sold it”. However, I would be surprised if any ticket office had any idea how this should actually be done as there is no process that I know of for doing it other than for a season ticket or railcard (and in over 20 years I’ve never come across such a situation).

But the OP bought his ticket from his "local station" and went there to have it reissued as per the NRCoT.

I took it to my local station where I bought it from only to be told 'We cannot replace it'
