Perhaps if the apps made this more visible to people then it wouldn’t be such a proglem

The Trainline never emailed me about my railcard expiry and trying to display your railcard in some of these apps takes a ridiculous amount of menu navigation

They could easily put a banner at the top warning you the railcard which they are holding in the same app has expired!

The numbers of inadvertent appliers of expired Railcard discounts are likely to be reduced by registering the Railcard with the online account, with an opt out at the ticket buying stage if that was needed.

The aim should be to reduce this problem, not to come up with a magical foolproof solution that eliminates it altogether. We can spend all of this year and next year discussing how perfection can be achieved, but we'd never agree on how.

Now that's something I can definitely support. It should be made a specific requirement that by a certain date all authorised ticket sellers should implement an option for people to register their railcard and get reminders/warnings about expiry, also possibly warnings if they attempt to apply any railcards other than the registered one. All entirely optional for the passenger, but massively reduces the possibility of innocent mistakes for the large number of people who only buy tickets for themselves.
