Seeing as we're on the subject of the WCML I'll punt this one in - does anyone else think that there would any merit in a 10 mile electrified chord from the South end of Dumfries to the South end of Lockerbie? Could speed up Dumfries journeys by at least half an hour (making rail more attractive), and instate regular ScotRail services through Lockerbie, taking the burden off of Transpennine and Virgin Trains.
For two towns of a combined population a little greater than the likes of Stirling and Perth, the rail links from Lockerbie and Dumfries to Glasgow and Edinburgh really are poor in comparison.
Not the greatest idea in the world but thinking it through, I wouldn't say it would be the worst scheme to invest in compared to others that have been touted.
