A quick question, how were / are PSB panels expanded when new sections are moved in to them?

Specific examples I am thinking about are back when Wolverhampton PSB was still in service; when the new platform 4 was built at Wolverhampton, was a new panel installed or the existing panel modified? (The old panel would have only had 5 platforms, as opposed to the 6 after the development)

Also, when a smaller box closes and control switches to the PSB (Codsall closing and control switching to Wolverhampton PSB again) are new panels added?

I realise that this question will become redundant as PSBs are eventually replaced by ROCs, but I am interested to know how the PSB areas of control would be expanded.

It depends primarily on the extent of the alteration and the construction of the original panel. Many panels are of a tiled construction which theoretically makes them easier to alter but they are more expensive.

Codsall never was controlled by Wolverhampton. It went into Madeley Junction, the interior of which was ripped out and replaced with Westcad VDU as a workstation, along with the former control areas of Cosford, Madeley Junction itself and Wellington. Madeley Junction in turn was closed and demolishes when it's area was moved to a new control workstation at 'New Saltley'.

Things do change - old PSB panels are made of little squares that fit together and are made bespoke for new changes, or where things are removed they can just be covered over.

When the Clacton line was first planned for Colchester PSB. it was to be an NX panel, built next to the existing Colchester area panel, but at the last minute there was a change in plan, and they decided to make Colchester, what would now be called a mini-roc ! and built an extension to make the PSB half as big again, and the Clacton line was done as an MCS system together with the Marks Tey - Colchester resignalling, the plan was then for Ipswich / Stowmarket and Norwich to be converted to MCS, but the plug was pulled shortly after Colchester & Clacton were commissioned, Ipswich was deemed unsuitable for MCS, and Norwich fell by the wayside, Yarmouth / Lowestoft, are supposed to be coming in here (MCS) in the next couple of years, but with NR having to revise all resig jobs, we now have our doubts.

The building work for the 'extra bit' took about 3 years, and was a bit of an upheaval, but the end wall was left intact until they had almost finished so we were spared all the dust etc :) still a lot of noise with all the banging about, but the builders were under strict instuction, that if they were told to be quiet (due to incidents etc) they were to down tools / stop straight away.

As for the pics in the link further up, ( 3 Bridges) when Ipswich Yard was remodelled in 2013/14 then that was done in a similar way on overnight 'possessions' where the panel was taken apart, although day time / night time work on panels did go ahead where it did not intefere too much with the signallers job :)
