Excess fare refused

Some staff really don't like issuing excess fares (they may see it as difficult) and some don't mind if there is a value to them, but won't issue them if the value is zero.

I believe some TOCs require a form to be completed and some staff either don't want to bother filling it in or maybe don't know where the forms are kept or some other reason that doesn't really make any logical sense.

This may be the case for zero fare excess, however I cannot see a TOC having a form to fill in for a standard excess.
Some Mobile TIS require an explanation on your shift sheet for any ZF that you have done but that is it.

Sorry for any confusion; yes I was just referring to zero fare excesses. Maybe some staff just don't want to add the explanation?

I've also known staff on the train allowing travel to a further destination instead of en excess, which I think is fine if there is no barrier or revenue check at the destination.

Might happen in some circumstances, but doubt this would ever be the case for the journey / amended journey that was mentioned upthread by the OP.

It's quite some way onward from Ashford International to Stratford International (after the relatively short initial trip starting out from Sturry).

No, for the avoidance of doubt I was just taking about zero fare excesses, where some staff simply endorse travel on the original ticket, rather than issue the excess coupon.

It's long been the case that many staff do anything to avoid issuing zero fare excesses, right back to BR days. I've never managed to get one, it's always been some sort of workaround (or in the more reasonable days before PFs and mass prosecutions, just "don't worry about it, it's the same price anyway"*).

* Back in the days of Edmondson tickets and the likes, they were often something like "Liverpool to Walton, Bank Hall or Kirkby" anyway, so there was a bit of flexibility built in.

I tried to swap a single into a return once. The conductor didn’t even attempt it and just said to me double check next time. The ticket was an E-ticket. Can anything be done with that anyway?

Yes. I once arrived at Bristol Temple Meads to make my return journey to realise I had only purchased a single that morning. Spoke to the ticket office who managed to excess it to the intended Off-Peak Day Return for the grand sum of five pence!

Now that’s good news. My fear here is being charged a new single ticket, therefore doubling the fare. Luckily not happened to me yet
