If someone buys a ticket, say Peterborough-London and they buy a single when they meant to buy a return, would you be able to excess the single to a return on the day of the return journey?

Not usually. Has to be done straight away, normally at the Ticket Office you Purchased the Original at.

I would say no because the off-peak single has been used and therefore no longer has any validity

I would say not once used. If a customer realised the mistake before boarding the train, they can take it back to the ticket office and have it voided and reissued.

Yes, I did this on Saturday on behalf of a friend. He bought a Off Peak Single, excessed it to a return for 10p excess.

I think it's fine if excessed at the ticket office of issue shortly after - but at the destination it would be too easy for someone to pick up a random used ticket and try to blag it.

Indeed. This was asked on here recently - there's no obligation for booking office staff to sell the excess, but it certainly is sensible, and good customer service.

I used to do it if I was satisfied the customer was being genuine - it was actually standard procedure. Many people mistakenly chose singles instead of returns from TVMs.
