But that's the England way - it's never the fault of the team, or a case of them not being good enough.

Tournaments from 1994 onwards:

1994 Turnips!!!!!

1996 Penalties. Never mind the fact that we beat Spain on penalties having been highly fortunate to even reach a shoot-out.

1998 Beckham vilified for getting sent off. Yes, OK, he shouldn't have kicked out at Simeone, even if he was provoked, but if anything we played better after he went and could easily have won in the Second Half but for a foul by Shearer.

2000 Keegan. End of. There might actually be a case here.

2002 A freak free kick. And Scolari (as we would later find out) always beats Sven anyway, so it was destiny.
In practice, Seaman had had his day and wasn't really good enough by this stage.

2004 Scolari. Again. And then penalties. Again. Not to mention Rooney getting injured in the same game.

2006 The classic example. Rooney sent off, Ronaldo winking and then penalties. Against Scolari. Again. Few in the media industry seemed to accept that Rooney was not set up and deserved his red; Sven on the other hand is said to have gone to the referee's dressing room after the game and said, "He stamped on him, didn't he?" (Or something to that effect anyway.)

2008 Umbrellas. And McClaren. In practice, the team just couldn't care. Although I'm not sure if McClaren was really suited to international football as a full-time manager anyway.

2012 Penalties. Again
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Whose idea was it to let Cashley take a penalty? <( He shouldn't have been allowed to take one any earlier than #11...

Aye :(

Oh well. Never mind. The side that deserved to win did so. And Pirlo was outstanding the whole match - his penalty capped a tremendous match for him.

Whoever should win between Germany and Italy, I hope you destroy the Iberians in the Final.

I can get behind that!

Pirlo's penalty was absolute brilliance, how on earth he had the nerve to do that amazes me!

You know Shearer et al, instead of saying what England did wrong, why not just admit the better (and more deserving) team won.

A good tournament from England despite all the controversy behind the scenes.

That would require dignity and honesty: two things pundits always forget when England or a Manchester club is playing

Is it a coincidence that Groups B and C both have two representatives in the last four? Not a chance.

You forgot to mention European club competition :p

Well, I am pleased that Italy are through. Call me unpatriotic, but justice was done and the (by far) better team has come out on top. We are just simply not good enough.

Grr I type a reply and lose it because "The Server is busy"...

Anyway though the best team won (not that I wanted them to of course - just admitting they were the better team), although that's not to say England didn't try though they had a few chances (even if Italy played better). Then again I'm sure that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are celebrating though :P

Although to be honest I had a feeling it would end this way, England and penalties and you just know they are going to lose!

"If there is a positive, at least we can't lose to Germany now."

- Gary Lineker. A highly amusing way to finish the night...

In the grand scheme of things, very true.

With two days less rest and after playing extra time, never mind the fact we are not as good, we would have been absolutely mullered by the Germans.

Would rather go out on penalties now than go for a mauling against Germany,

Yesterday, I watched a thoroughly professional England side beat a decent opposition by playing sensibly, an excellent performance with no small amount of skill involved. And then in the evening I watched the football. Outplayed, outclassed, humiliated, made to look like a bunch of Under 11s. Earlier in the tournament the England side seemed to have learned that possession is King in international football, but last night it was back to the same old tosh. Ashley Young was awful, and his abysmal standard of play set the tone for the rest. Still, thankfully justice was done - imagine the annihilation the German's would've dished out?! Still, doubtless the press will go back to saying how wonderful the England players are in a month or so when the Premiership restarts despite all evidence to the contrary. I can't wait:(

England had just 35% possession last night. To be fair the fact they held out for so long is astonishing!

A good tournament from England despite all the controversy behind the scenes.

Shame they played some terrible football though throughout.

I was not surprised though. At least we can finally wave goodbye to the over 30s who have let the side down again and again. Golden generation? my geordie arse!

Members of this forum may under the impression that everyone in Scotland has a "chip on their shoulder" as big as this contributor.

Fortunately that is not the case, some of us appreciate and support whichever constituent part of The United Kingdom is competing in a sporting event.

My memory stretches back to a time when Scotland were the sole representatives of the UK in World Cups. At the time I lived in England and was pleased to see they were supported by the vast majority of English people.

With regard to harping back to "1966" all the time you can be sure that had Scotland ever achieved similar success the situation would be exactly the same up here, with constant references to it - see Celtic 1967 et al :p

Do the championships just end now that England are out of it? If not then why close the thread?

Because in his myopic world England being knocked out is all that it is of any consequence :p

Ahh I see. So by focusing on Englands abject failure it kind of covers up for the fact that his own country, yet again, hasnt got a sniff at a major championship. But we wont point that out to him.;)

Why does everyone, from pundit to fanboy here, forget that defence is an integral part of the game? England were not "outplayed" last night, any more than Italy were. An "Outplayed" team would have lost by several goals. What actually happened was that England succeeded defensively, but were unable to put together many potent attacks; Italy were less active defensively, but their attacks were rendered equally impotent.
So who should not continue his England career? I would suggest Young and Parker have had their chance, and Rooney should be told to go away and work on his fitness.

Aye being defesive is great. It stops goals. But if you're not doing much in the way of attack then its just horrendous to watch and is quite a defeatist approach.

Goals win games.

Lampard,Terry,Gerrard,Parker,Ferdinand(even though he wasnt playing) and anyone who is over the age of 30 now needs to be told its goodbye from him.

Golden generation they were called. Englands best players we were told. Experience will get us through the players themselves have said many times.

And what have we got as a return from these club superstars? Ill tell you what we have got.

F**K all. Wrap it up anyway you want. England are a constant let down and have been for years. Im just hoping Hodgson see's sense now rather then later and gets a good young squad together for the WC qualifiers later this year.

To some defence is the only bit worth watching:).

I think you do need a bit of long-term experience in any team. So I would not ditch Gerrard or, sadly, Terry just yet. But make sure they are used to help develop others. One of the hardest aspects of management - in any area, let alone sport - is to know how and when to move things on.

Golden generation they were called. ....
I thought that particular joke applied to the Beckham/Scholes/Neville era, when everyone overbought in to the Manchester United are brilliant myth

Not sure I was watching the same game as you, aside from last ditch tackles and some sound defending, I'm not sure I can count on one hand the number of chances Italy missed, they should have won in normal time quite comfortably.

With reapect they were actually brilliant during the 90s and 00s. Their haul of championships and cups shows this. But im sure you could include Gerrard et al in there also as they played with them - hence the continuing problem at times of playing Lampard and Gerrard together.

I like experience in a team, dont get me wrong, but the experience they have now is as failures within the National squad and thats something I dont think they should be passing on do you?

A good old clear out will do the trick.

The problem for England is being unable to play as a team, and also showing that they rely heavily on support from non-English players in their premiership teams. Out on their own, they look like they always do - disjointed and with a belief that they simply deserve to win.

England rely too much on luck, which can only get you so far - or gets you further than you really deserved to get to, causing a major blow that gets the press into a frenzy.

Not everyone but this contributor amongst 90% of Scots were happy last night. ;)

Hardly a huge amount of Scots shouting for England was there.

My memory stretches back to a time when Scotland were the sole representatives of the UK in World Cups. At the time I lived in England and was pleased to see they were supported by the vast majority of English people.

Must be waaayyyyyyy before my time ;)

Yes they live off that cup win just like aberdeen live off their 80s success.

Do the championships just end now that England are out of it? If not then why close the thread?

Yes the championship ended for about 51 million people last night.

Because in his myopic world England being knocked out is all that it is of any consequence :p

I'm Scottish and want my English rivals to get beat every time. So what? ;)

Ahh I see. So by focusing on Englands abject failure it kind of covers up for the fact that his own country, yet again, hasnt got a sniff at a major championship. But we wont point that out to him.;)

Covers what up? Scotland are Tom Kite and I've never said otherwise. It doesn't matter that we don't qualify for major championships because theres always top comedy to watch with England.......

Out of interest who do you support during The Olympics or British Lions Tours?

No interest in Olympics or Rugby.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Doesnt mean that for football fans they will not watch the rest of the tournament.

No but there definitely will not be as much interest south of the border now England are out.
