England and Italy at least in recent years have tended to play quite defensively so there's a good chance this match could end up going to penalties but I don't think either team are going to want this. England have been involved in 6 penalty shoootouts in major competitions and lost 5 of them, Italy have been involved in 7 and lost 5 so combined that's just 3 wins out of 13 penalty shootouts.

Ah, but the Italians have Buffon, one of the best penalty savers in world football - remember the AC v Juve CL Final or when he saved Mutu's penalty in the World Cup?

It was Euro 2008 rather than the World Cup but Buffon didn't save Zidane's penalty in the final or any of the penalties in the penalty shootout at the end of that match, Italy were lucky that Trezeguet hit the crossbar. Buffon also only saved one of the penalties against Spain in the 2008 shootout and Italy still ended up losing as Cassillas saved two penalties.

No he wasnt, but i think ITV is like a virus. Everything it touches turns to sh*t. They should be ban from showing live football.

France are playing extra defenders to counter the Spanish attack, yet Spain are not playing any strikers. Do either team want to win tonight?

There's the first Spanish dive of the match (that I've seen)

Great, looks like the divers are going to win.

Can anyone tell me just what is so exciting about making 28 passes and getting absolutely nowhere?

There is the second Spanish dive. OK, that one was a free kick but no need to go down like you'd been kicked in the bollocks

Spain are giving us a top-level performance in terms of winning free kicks that shouldn't be free kicks, whereas France - Real Madrid player Benzema aside - are trying to play the game with honour. Just this once, come on France.

Surprised Spain didn't appeal for a penalty just then when Lloris handled the ball in the French penalty area

The refs need to get their cards out and clamp down on these unsporting attempts to get penalties, free kicks, possession or to get the opposition booked/sent off. If they don't there will be a farce - not unlike the WC final (where Spain got nearly all the Dutch players booked for fouls which did not deserve them)

You'd take him in your team though eh.

No chance :p Ex-Liverpool scum have no place at Goodison (with a very limited number of exceptions). And England are too slow at build-ups for him to fit in.

What's the difference between a lemming and Mario Balotelli?

Answer: A lemming can stay on its feet.

There's going to be obscene amounts of injury time here. Just hoping it stays 0-0 for the sake of the prediction league

Three minutes. I was expecting more tbf but England look on the ropes so their best bet is likely to try and hold out for extra time

As a Liverpool supporter, this is horribly familiar - they're doing what Liverpool did all last season - just blindly hoofing it upfield hoping Carroll can get near it. It didn't work for us then and it's not going to work for us now <(

That was too close >.<

Gary Lineker seems to think the omens are in England's favour. That would be a first!

You have to admit that he's defended well though :p

That was one cheeky penalty. Surprised Cashley didn't dive :p

With penalties like those last two England deserve to be knocked out!

Whose idea was it to let Cashley take a penalty? <( He shouldn't have been allowed to take one any earlier than #11...

Aye :(

Oh well. Never mind. The side that deserved to win did so. And Pirlo was outstanding the whole match - his penalty capped a tremendous match for him.

Whoever should win between Germany and Italy, I hope you destroy the Iberians in the Final.
