Hi Geera,

I've just realised you're new to this forum, so first of all I'd like to say welcome.
You'll find this forum very useful indeed in preparing for a role in the rail industry, as I've found out myself.

In answer to your question, WAFV is a Stage 2 test of vigilance, the WCT is a test of written communication (which you're unlikely to have to sit in EMT's recruitment process) and the SJE is a Stage 2 character profile 'survey', designed to give the assessors and insight into the way you work.

In the WAFV, you stare at a white screen with a small flashing grey square in it. You have to press a designated (green) button on your specially designed keyboard as fast as you can whenever the colour of the square changes to black. This test is 30 minutes in length and requires intense concentration, despite its simplicity.

In the WCT, you spend some time examining pictures that explain a story, (the practice material shows you arriving late to a doctor's appointment because of flooding.) You have to write a letter or report explaining the circumstances shown in the pictures. (ie. Why you were late for the doctor's appointment) using as much relevant information as you can, like times.
You probably shouldn't worry about this test with EMT, as they probably won't actually get you to do it at the assessments. ("It's too easy!" we were told). It's now an optional OPC test, so it's down to individual TOCs whether you do it or not.

In the SJE, which you sit after successfully passing all the other tests, you simply read about some scenarios, with possible actions. You just have to rate the actions on a scale from 'Most Helpful' to 'Most Unhelpful,' based on your own opinion. You can't 'Fail' this test. This is just used to create a character profile of you, determining the way your interview may progress, and cross-referencing the answers you give.

Hope this helps!

Best of luck with your aspirations Geera! :D

Hi Dynamonic,

I was really pleased to find out that you passed the first stage of assessments I'm awaiting the next recruitment/vacancy opportunity date and was trying to gain some information regarding the type of assessments I would have to undertake some that I can practice so I have no excuses when the time for recruitment comes along. I know about the group bourdon and ATVAT assessments but don't know which assessments are in the first stage. would you mind giving me an insight into these assessments please Thanks

I am kinda hoping that they may be doing notts then derby emails as i put down derby only. I would normally blitz the stage 1 tests but i went to a family funeral the day before and didnt get a good rest. I am so annoyed with myself. I passed them 5 years ago without any problems. Maybe in another 6 months. Good luck to you guys in stage 2.

Hi Dynamonic,

Thanks for the warm welcome to the forum I appreciate your help very much. would it be possible for you to give myself some insight into stage 1 process as in what assessments I would be required to undertake if successful in my application, The information that you have provided in the last post was fantastic but i'm unsure what I need to practice in stage 1 and 2 of these assessments as it seems some TOC's differ in their requirements/assessments to others. Is there any software tools that you advise and would be a good practice aid in preparation for these tests
Regards

Hi again Geera,

Stage 1 consists of the following tests, which are all pen and paper exercises:

Group Bourdon

In this test, you will be presented with several grids containing groups of dots. These are arranged into patterns of three, four or five dots.
You will be required to strike through all the groups of four dots, working as quickly as you can ACCURATELY go.
The key here is not to rush through, but to have a consistent and comfortable pace which you can keep through the whole test. The idea is, you want to avoid marking groups incorrectly or missing them out in a mad rush.
You will have about two minutes per grid, and when the assessor says, "Change", you immediately move to the next grid. There's about five grids in all. 10 minutes of solid concentration.

If you haven't done so already, this thread contains a link to a very useful Group Bourdon practice tool which you can download to practice the test.
I found this very useful indeed in finding a working pace that suited me and got me through the test.

Trainabilty for Rules and Procedures Part 1 (TRP1)

This test measures how much information you can retain when taught it in audio, reading and writing, mimicking a classroom learning environment.
You will be presented with two pages of operational rules and procedures (which are fictional) governing the use of a piece of railway equipment. In my case, and seemingly every other case I've come across so far, this was for a 'GLOP track applicator.'

Basically, an audio recording will read out the same information that's on your sheets and then you will have a short period of time (eight minutes I think?) to read the information through yourself and make notes on it. It contains quite in-depth detail, so making notes definitely is recommended!

When the time is up, you will have your text sheets and notes taken from you, then you will be presented with 18 multiple choice questions to answer, based on what you have learned.

Trainabilty for Rules & Procedures Part 2 (TRP2)

This is the famous Dials test.

Basically, in this test you will be presented with four dials in every question, and you have to determine the order in which you check them, based on their reading.

Each dial has four different-coloured areas, called 'Zones', and a numerical scale outside. A needle will be pointing in a certain zone on each dial. You will be presented with a key that shows the order in which the colours should be checked. You order the dials based on the key that is provided to you, depending on where the needles are pointing.

Now, you may have needles pointing in the same coloured zones on more than one dial. When this happens, you look at the numerical scale outside the dials, and priortise those dials based on lowest numerical figures. You can get caught out here because the scale is different on each dial, so it's important to look at the numbers themselves, and not just where the needle appears to be pointing.

Reading this may have just confused you completely, but when you get the practice material with an assessment invite, this should start to make sense.

You will be asked 43 questions which I doubt you'd finish in the time allowed. I answered about 27 of them and passed. I've heard people have still passed with about 20. Just get them right (obviously, lol).

TEA-Occ

This new test is divided into three parts:

Part 1

In Part 1, you are asked to listen to audio recording of tones. There are two tones, low and high.
You have to count the low tones, whilst ignoring the more distracting high tones.
The first tone is always a low tone, and would count as 'one'.
At regular intervals, the narrator on the audio recording will ask you to write down your answer. Then you repeat the process again several times.

Part 2

In part 2, you will be presented with a yellow sheet of A3 paper, which contains a telephone directory of services.
With this, you will be presented with a symbol card, which contains four pairs of matching symbols.
Each listing in the directory contains a selection of symbols.
You have to go through, and circle the listings that contain symbol pairs that match with symbol pairs on your card.

Part 3

In part 3, both parts 1 and 2 are combined to test your ability to multi-task.
You will be presented with another 'Yellow Pages' sheet, and you find the same symbol pairs again. However, this time, you count tones at the same time. Thankfully, you will only have single-toned tones to count this time. When the narrator asks you to write your answer, you stop circling listings, and write the answer to the number of tones you counted. You will then start finding the symbols and counting the tones again, repeating the process several times.

That is Stage 1! Like I mentioned earlier, you probably won't understand much of it now, but it will become more clear once you get the practice material hitting your doormat. :D

All the best!

I wouldn't worry about not hearing just yet. I waited a month to find out I passed Stage 1. I too assumed the worst.

I'm still waiting to find out if I passed my Stage 2 now, lol. (Sat on the 7th Jan) Again, it's a challenge for me because I now know of people who have had DM interviews, but I would have thought I may have had a simple rejection letter by now if I'd failed. Who knows though? Time will tell.

I don't know for certain, but I'm thinking everyones' results are processed independently of each other, based on whether the OPC have marked them, or like you said, it may be down to your choice of depot amongst other pssoble factors.

Also, there is a maximum number of applicants (6) who can sit Stage 2 on any given date. They may not have a date for you yet.

I hope you hear some great news very soon though! :D

Hi again Dynamonic lol
Thank you so much once again for all your information and help that you have provided for me and others on this forum. I really appreciate it, your correct in that it does seem a little confusing regarding the "dials" assessment but i'm sure I will understand it if successful in getting to stage 1.I'l keep a lookout for the next bout of vacancies whenever they may be, hopefully soon. Good luck in your next phase of assessments i'm sure you will be successful just let us know how you get on
Regards

I attended for the stage 1 assessment for EMT at Derby on 17th Jan and looking at this thread it seems several people who attended on the same day have received notification to attend stage 2 (well done by the way).
As yet I haven't heard anything but obviously I am getting a bit twitchy.
Are only those successful notified or does everyone who attend get to hear their fate.
I see from an earlier post that BelperKez is hoping that they are currently doing Nottingham and as I applied for Derby I am hoping he's right.

Congrats Mick.

Was just wondering if anyone has worked or still works for EMT and can tell me what the training pay is? And the pay scale after that.

Cheers

I've previously heard it's £32,000 with no separate training salary, but whether that's changed or not I don't know.

Maybe one of these people with DM success stories may now know for sure? ;)

You are about right. It's around the £32k mark with no training wage.

With so many of you hearing that you have passed stage 1 and some of you even stage 2 already, I have called HR at EMT to see how I go on.
Assuming the worst I was informed I passed and am waiting a loading date for stage 2.
The lady said that there was a high pass rate on the assessment days on 16th 17th Jan and that the stage 2 provider is unable to furnish enough dates for everyone. As dates become available people will be allocated their slot.
She also said that all those who were unsuccessful have been notified already.

So no news is good news for anyone still waiting.

Thanks for that info Bannside, and well done on passing! :D

Even though I'm on my third week of waiting for my MMI result, I've been feeling positive about the whole thing, especially reading up on how people can wait ages for news, and when they get it, it's all good!

I've seen plenty of examples recently on this forum of, 'No news is good news' which is very encouraging indeed!

It seems as though everyone is being slowly filtered through the system one at a time because of numbers, and I know that EMT have multiple recruitment drives going on for other roles at the moment too!

Patience is obviously key here! :D

Best of luck to everyone else waiting for news too!

Unlucky Dynamonic - sorry to hear that. Keep your chin up mate and put it down to experience - ask them for some constructive feedback and you'll be ready next time :)
