There are still two direct Northbound services an hour for Nottingham from St Pancras, but they now leave within 15 minutes of each other, so if you miss the second hourly service you have to wait 45 minutes for the next train.

This takes us back to where we were when MML first introduced the Turbostars and had two trains to Nottingham leaving St Pancras within 10 minutes of each other.

I also see that between 1 February and 29 March, some Sunday trains take three hours from St Pancras to Nottingham. Just brilliant!

Thats not too great but the gap between the departures from Nottingham is 26 minutes (XX:02 and XX:28.). So it depends which way you look at it.

I also read in a the Yorkshire and Humber Route Ultilisation Plan today that East Midlands Trains plan to extend the Derby service to Sheffield in December 2009 which would be great if travelling from London as the gap between the Derby and Sheffield services will be 30 minutes (XX:25 and XX:55). But from Sheffield it would not be as great as the gap between departures there would be about 15 minutes (XX:27 and around XX:42-for the current Derby service)

3 HOURS! Where do they go! I'm sure it's about that from Sheffield.

TSRs (Temporary Speed Restrictions), also on Sundays there's a high chance that EMT have to share the slow lines south of Bedford or St Albans due to engineering work.

Ah right. Talking about speed restrictions there has been a couple between Chesterfield and Derby now for what seems like months! Anybody know whats happening there?

Replacing track is probably the best bet, though I don't know for sure.

Yep, and in the new timetable the 1630 from KingsX with the change at Grantham, still gets you to Nottingham 8 minutes quicker that the 1630 from St Pancras.

EMT should be ashamed of that one.

It's even easier for me because if I get a stopping service from Grantham to Nottingham at the right time, I can get off at Netherfield only a couple of minutes away from my house  (though having said that, the new service from there is stupid too :|)

Also fares are often much cheaper via Grantham.
I regularly use the 1410 from King's Cross on Sunday afternoon changing at Grantham for Nottingham and booking in advance on NatEX east Coast Website, with their on line reduction, I rarely pay over £12 for a single. Its very difficult to get anything as cheap as that on EMT recently on a Sunday afternoon.

Even the ordinary pay on the day off peak returns are cheaper via Grantham.

Had lunch last Sunday with a recently retired senior manager from EMT. He directed me to read the franchise agreement.

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/rail/passenger/publicregister/current/eastmidlands/

And of particular interest is comparing Service Commitment 1 (essentially the MML service) with Service Commitment 2 (the "winning" idea from Stagecoach/EMT).

If you like timetables you could have hours of interest comparing the micro-detail for SC2 to the December timetable, but I'll cut the heart of it:

The new service commitment is for a contractually slower serice for NOT-STP than we had from MML. And all those stops on the NOT-STP "fast" service are in the contract too.

There is a get-out-of-jail option, EMT have to submit a business case for making best use of the linespeed infrastructure improvements, and this can include a revised Service Commitment.

Deadline for the submission for DfT? December 2008. In other words far too soon for any operational experience & customer feedback from SC2 to be included.

This new EMT timetable is a complete disaster. We have two new stations which aren't going to get a service yet but trains will be stopping at them - E Midlands Parkway and Corby, maybe(?) - and my service from/to Loughborough has now degenerated into a farce. We had a train every 30 minutes now we will get one at xx20 and xx40 but the xx40 arrives at St P 5 mins behind the xx20. Going back from St P we have two departures an hour at xx25 and xx30! The corresponding E Midlands Parkway service has a 7/53 minute up service and a 50/10 down service.

Of course, half those stops in my area will not happen until the industry gets its act together and builds the station!

I'm ashamed to be a railwayman when I see such stupidity and bad management.

Why our govt cant do good by controlling this EMT's unfair attitude. I am from Nottingham. Every weekend i come back to nottingham from london to join with my family. I go back to london monday morning by taking one 6.02 or 6.08 Am trians. Now they are saying : You will enjoy more benefits with extra 700 seats on our trains between london-nottingham. In reality, they cancelled 3 serives (6.02,6.07,6.20) and replaced with just 6.23 train which reach london by 8.26AM. I have to start work from 9 AM. So, it will not be a good option for me. EMT bosses should be good polititians ...made good publicity ..
Recently, they said, we are making ticketing more easier.. we are not increasing ticket prices : What they did is, they cancelled few good priced tickets : weekend tickets, and few other nice tickets.. so people should buy full fare ( if they travel from london to nottingham on friday back to london on monday morning).
Now, they reduced services and saying that they increased the seats.. Is there any one who can stop EMT? they are playing with people's money during this recession period.. It is not good for us.. we should protest. I think govt controlled rail services are far better than these people..
No one can do them : this is their attitude.. Please save us polititians..

Personaly I don't think there are any less advanced cheap tickets in the new timetable on the Sheffield-London route.
I have to agree that some services have dissapeared. There are less services to Leeds and less services going south from Chesterfield in the morning.
Also in the evening to Sheffield there are currently 20:25, 21:25 and 22:25. After the timetable change this changes to - 20:55 and 22:25! A whoping 1 and a half hour gap!

Edit: I just looked at the current timetable and there only appears to be 06:07 and 06:25 trains leaving Nottingham on weekday mornings. They probably want the people who normally get the 06:07 train to get the new 05:35 or 06:28 train instead as the 06:07 might not be very busy.

By the way the government agreed to East Midlands Trains proposals and it is them who want the price to go up so they dont have to fund the railways as much.

One thing about there new timetables i cannot understand is why they would want to stop at Liverpool South Parkway on the Liverpool-Norwich route when trains in the peak hour out of Liverpool are full to bursting with only two carriages.

They say they are going to increase the number of strengthened services but yet with the reliability of there Class 158s being drastically low how long will it be before they only send two carriages and no body is able to get on at intermediate stations because everyone has piled on at Lime St.

You think thats bad! I seen a single Class 153 (153302) on a Chesterfield-Norwich train today.

That's the problem with our railways though, they're arguably controlled far more by Whitehall these days than under BR.

Franchises are drawn up by politicians and their Civil Servants with outrageous financial requirements and minimal service requirements.

Blimey !

Ps..the Medrian in AVATAR Is 222001

Cool!

Also I am growing quite concerned with the number of 5 car Meridians on Sheffield-London from next week... All of these trains should either be 7 car or 5+5 car Meridians in my opinion. A 5 car Meridian simply is not enough to replace a HST. Unless EMT are hoping Derby passengers will take the improved and faster Derby-London service...

Bring on 2 trains per hour Sheffield-London I say.

0648 NOT-STP was 2x5 car Meridian. Good idea I thought, it's always over-crowded. Trouble is only 5 cars available until Kettering; so it's now over-crowded at Market Harborough in half the train, and empty in the other half

Over time perhaps it will work out, because the good citizens of Kettering, Wellingborough, and Luton might learn to queue for the train at the emptier end. Until then, the crowding is worse and there's no quiet coach. So a pretty cr*p idea really. Open the whole train at Nottingham and it might just work.

On the upside my journey home was bliss.

1630 from Kings X, leaves from platform 1 so I can just cycle on from York Road, stops once at Stevenage, free WiFi so i can finish off my emails, then I hop off at Grantham. EMT Skegness service arrives a couple of minutes later as it's a long scheduled stop at Grantham. Then off to Nottingham, arriving at 1822, eight mins ahead of the 1630 from St Pancras. So from Kings X the train stops just four times (Stevenage, Grantham, Bottesford, Bingham) which is fewer stops than the so-called mainline service!

The only minus was I was home in time to watch East Midlands Today. Forgotten what a joke regional TV news is :)

I noticed that there were problems on EMT mainline between Sheffield-London today. A lot of the trains were running about 15 minutes late? Had there been an incident or was the new timetable too quick ?
Also I noticed a lot of 5 car Meridians on this route. They do suit the capacity needed though I was only with 3 other people in coach A of the 13:27 service south.

According to the local media, there was a fatality at Luton at approx. 1215 (involving the 1155 STP-SHF).

Based on observations at Luton Airport Parkway (LTN) and Kentish Town respectively, I'd say the 0647 KET-STP is in 10-car Meridian formation and the 1425 STP-DBY is a 5-car Meridian, assuming they both departed 'right-time'.

As planned, I caught the 0527 SHF-STP (HST) at LTN, and there were very few spare seats available - but thanks to the PIS-up I may not have even been able to find that out today (service was advertised on the wrong platform). It was also in reverse formation and it was somewhat amusing watching a few regulars heading towards the rear, only to find First Class there!

That was absolute bull yesterday

My train (13:18 out of Derby to London) was delayed by 40 minutes - due to not being able to get a train out the depot)

Replaced by an HST - with no buffet car, which was annoying as I'd forked out extra for 1st class

EDIT: It appears we got the same train AlexS

Some more sightings today (all assume right time departure):

The 0900 STP-KET and the 0726 DBY-STP passed through LTN, both as 5-car Meridians. The latter should be a HST according to the timetable. :???:

The service I rode into London was the 0708 LCN-STP (0934 LTN call), which was in 10-car Meridian formation. :D Unsurprisingly, the rear train had loads of empty seats (even more than the 0607 NOT-STP from the previous timetable) though I didn't look into the leading train; in addition, the PIS 'assigned' the 0934 to platform 1, but I stayed on platform 3 and sure enough, that's where it called. It's early days yet but the PIS seems unable to assign any train to platform 3 until it's actually in the station.

We were held outside STP in order to allow the 0955 STP-SHF to depart, then shortly after we arrived, the 1000 STP-KET departed. Both were 7-car Meridians, and as you may expect with a 5tph service to/from the MML platforms at STP they were all occupied.
