How long would initial training be, are we talking a couple of weeks or months?

I am talking in terms of needing to travel to Derby just for the training. Not sure if family commitments would allow me to travel if it's for the entire year.

I think I might give this a go, but I’m a bit concerned about the 45 mins travel time. Does this mean 45 mins at any time of the day? So in the early hours you’re within 45 mins by night bus/walking etc? I could do 45 mins (just) at night in a taxi but not by transport.

Yes it will mean at any time. It helps that there is parking at St Pancras. Quite a few are able to use the 24 hour Thameslink services, although clearly this depends on where you live.

There’s no official taxi agreement outside of working hours, if that’s what you mean.

I’m not sure how it would go down if you said you were going to pay for your own taxis in, as it’s potentially less reliable than having your own transport.

Thank god Thameslink is 24 hours, just over 20 mins to St Pancras for me from Mill Hill Broadway.

Almost certainly done as part of the initial sift. However you never know so just apply and see.

It’s 16 weeks in the classroom then rules exam, then 2-3 weeks traction depending on location, then 2 weeks high speed handling and then out with your mentors for your 240 hours.

Worth emphasising it’s minimum 240 hours, and there may well be delays between the stages, and other bits and bobs added in.

It’ll be interesting to see how this all works in London as they are less geared up for “street to seat” trainees than other parts of the operation.

I recently applied for a GWR Trainee role but didn't get past my pre recorded video interview does that count as failing OPC Driver testing or is it if you actually failed on the SJTs?

Wrong thread but no as it's not the DMI or MMI which are done in person / under supervision.

You apply when you join the company and you normally have them within 6 weeks.

You’d only be in Derby Monday to Friday. You wouldn’t get charged for travel on EMR trains, priv rates are 25% of the ticket price for other TOCs.

Yes, there is a pretty substantial correlation between commute length and a) incidents b) lateness c) absenteeism/sickness

In regards to travel time from the depot, it seems odd that you would need to live within 45 minutes of a depot that you likely (if successful) won’t be working at until possibly 2026. Surely there should be some way of stating that you would relocate if getting the job.

If successful at the initial sift, they will check with the OPC directly so you don’t have to do anything. You’ll be told what you have or haven’t got to do. A tip too for all applying - don’t expect quick (if any) answers from the team dealing with the recruitment. They will be swamped!
