Is it so inconceivable that there are times of day when a lot more people might want to go between Leicester / Loughborough / Nottingham / Derby / Chesterfield / Sheffield and London but not that many between Luton / Bedford / Wellingborough and London?
Not at all but it seems that EMR have misjudged. Shortening the intercity trains was never going to end well. Good connections at Kettering every half hour is only likely to increase passenger numbers rather than reduce them

A large part of why electrification and more trains was paid for in the first place was the significant number of office commuters who used Luton or Bedford to get to Central London most weekdays. Not exactly the current state of affairs.
Was that really the reason? I thought the limited stop Thameslink trains that ran in the peaks served that purpose? Anyway, they have been saved by Covid. With such poor class 360 availability, they would be up a well known creek without a paddle if they had 2019 commuter numbers.

If you take the fast trains from Kettering you can have an extra 15 minutes in bed every morning and still arrive in London at near enough the same time. Seems like only the flows from Wellingborough and Corby would be diverted onto the Connect services especially given the condition of the 360s.

Much as the 360s aren’t in a great state and are looking rather tired, cleanliness wise, they’re little different to the Meridians.

I’d be very surprised if the long distance trains arriving at St Pancras in the morning peak are wedged. Indeed I know they’re not as I’ve seen them!

Busier by the day; admittedly still not wedged (weekends a different story). Thameslink “traditional peak” loadings are also markedly increasing which is good to see.

The “fast” GTR services were taken out prior to the 360s starting. EMR (when running!) is approx 20 mins faster to/from Bedford then the quickest GTRs.

Indeed, which is why EMR have / would have taken over those slots, thus making them more useful because they could serve Wellingborough too*.To avoid overall reducing capacity they would have run a number of twelve cars.

And eliminating the need to pay for the bus between Bedford and Wellingborough, for all of the difference that makes.

The 0600 Meridian departures from St Pancras to Nottingham and Sheffield which used to stop and pick up 20+ passengers at the Luton stations now race through with 10% of seats filled.
There was a time when you could travel to Derby, Leicester, Nottingham, Chesterfield, Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester from these stations.
Now the contra peak flows see empty express trains wizz past, and hardly any customers travelling to the Midlands mecca of Corby.
This evening the 1617 was a packed 8 car unit, because the previous service was cancelled due delayed train crew.
The 1717 service from St Pancras was a 4 car unit.

I personally feel as though these 360s haven't actually resolved the main problem that I have noticed.

The main problem in terms of capacity isn't the stretch between Wellingborough and Kettering (where the EMR Connects are mostly running 8 car), it's the stretch between Kettering and Leicester. And of course the 8 car HSTs have been shortened to 5 car Meridians now.

The 14:13 departure from Leicester to Kettering was rammed in the 3.3 cars of Standard Class (the other 1.7 cars of 1st Class was quiet because it's too expensive). How is this supposed to maintain social distancing and keep Covid levels down? No wonder why Covid levels are increasing again! It would have been safer (albeit slower) to drive the 1 hour from Leicester to Wellingborough...

The 14:49 "EMR Connect" service, from Kettering to Wellingborough was 8 cars (all standard class) and was perfectly fine from a social distancing point of view. Plenty of room for everyone.

The problem is that, whilst the EMR Connect services were/are fine for their purpose, the capacity bottleneck hasn't been resolved - in actuality, it has been made worse. At the minimum, the 7 car 222s should be doing the Nottingham services (Sheffield is fine with 5 car as both Sheffield's are fast LEI-STP). Ideally, they should have electrified as far as Nottingham and Sheffield, used modern EMUs of at least 8 cars (preferably 12 cars) up there to do the Intercity services, retaining the intermediate stops (because that is where the extra capacity is needed!) and used a 4 car EMU to provide a Kettering-Corby shuttle.

I also don't know why they went for all that bother to increase the speeds of the 360s to 110mph, instead of the previous 100mph. The only place you'll get any benefit is doing the stretch between Wellingborough and Bedford: the electrified parts south of Bedford are capped at 100mph due to the old wiring, the stretch between Kettering and Corby is capped at 90mph due to linespeed restrictions, and the part between Kettering and Wellingborough is often don on the Slows (at least southbound), which have unnecessarily low speed limits of 90mph and 60mph (IMO, the 60mph sections extend too far out), hence the 360s do WEL-KET in a slower time than the Meridians, despite the former having better acceleration than the latter. Gong Northbound, you have to cross onto the Slows anyway, either just past Wellingbrough (=90mph) or just before Kettering (slow down too early to make use of the 100/110 limit as the points are only rated 30). It would have been better to use the time and resources doing the internal refurbishments instead.

I seem to remember a previous post saying that during their last year at Greater Anglia they went from 84,000 miles per major technical incident to just 18,000.
That's exactly the case and the 379s also saw a considerable drop off also in the same period.

My experience is that the Nottingham services are not as busy as the Sheffield services which has also had a cut in capacity with more 4/5 cars in place of the 7 cars. One 7 car diagram is now on the Nottingham service all day. Hopefully at the timetable change the diagrams will be updated to include more double sets as before. The real boost will be when the 810's come which will mean every service will have similar capacity as a 7 car 222 or more if a double set.

18,000 is not bad. Still better than most DMUs and nowhere near the bottom of the EMU tables.

360104 is currently in service attached to 109. It will be until at least 2059 when it arrives into St Pancras as 1H51.

I see 121 has undergone a slight livery tweak. It's only minor, but the yellow panel has been extended slightly at the top and the 331 Civity style corners have been rounded off a little.

It's been there that long, I'm surprised it hasn't been fully re-painted into Arlington's livery :D
