I think it's simply that Northern don't want them. Although unless they're in a really bad state I'd have thought they would be better than the ex-Greater Anglia units. Why don’t 156470/473/497/498 just go to Northern as well?
Northern would have them if it was a free choice, however in the current climate with the treasury looking for cuts, the chances of it happening are close to zero unfortunately. Why don’t 156470/473/497/498 just go to Northern as well?
Led to believe 156498 will struggle making it back in traffic at present. Severe corrosion.I think it's simply that Northern don't want them. Although unless they're in a really bad state I'd have thought they would be better than the ex-Greater Anglia units.

The ex GA units look rough from a passenger perspective and are taking anywhere up to 6 months each at Wolverton to make less err "crispy" - the worst of all worlds you could say!Indeed, looks can be deceiving . The EMT Refurbishment might have made them look nice from a passenger perspective, but from a mechanical perspective they are somewhat, crispy. Almost the opposite to the ex GA units, which look rough from a passenger perspective!
But at what cost, if there's no immediate need for the unit?If 156409 is anything to go by then the corrosion issues will not be an issue and can be attended to, here's a reminder!
(Effectively rebuilt) 156s for Northern might free up 150s for GWR at this pointIt's probably mentioned above, but what will these additional 156s be replacing (as they are unlikely to be additional). Aren't Northern's 153s all stored?
They're replacing the 153s that Northern sent for storage (at least that was the original plan, it may have changed now). It's probably mentioned above, but what will these additional 156s be replacing (as they are unlikely to be additional). Aren't Northern's 153s all stored?
Have caught the 6.58 from Whalley (ex 6.52 Clitheroe) since the timetable change and has been operateded by a single Class 150/1 and also 150/2.Shame, a few of the peak diagrams on Rochdale - Blackburn are booked for 2 carriages which is a reduction from the May timetable.
The diagrams forming the 0652 Clitheroe to Rochdale (previously 3 car) and 1654 (previously 4 car) and 1752 (previously 4 car) Rochdale to Blackburn would be ideal and not leave passengers behind, as will inevitably occur next month after the Christmas break.
The return to 2tph makes no difference as the 0652 and 1654 existed in the previous timetable as peak extras.
Move Barrow Hill - Ely in the new yearPermanent storage or heading there and then onto Ely Papworth Sidings at a later date?
Depends on the seat type fitted. One thing I have noticed is how abysmall the legroom on the Class 156 is for the taller person! Also should be fun when double units do operate, cramming everyone for stations with shorter platforms into 1 unit while one gets dragged empty between Blackburn and Clitheroe!
Has this move happened today please?170470/473/497 and 498 now off lease and moving Etches Park - Barrow Hill on Thursday
They left as planned yesterday morning.Has this move happened today please?
Oh yeah, it's Friday today - it's that time of year when days become mergedThey left as planned yesterday morning.
Fare well old stallions, may your musty old cab ends that smell faintly of damp and weed serve you well in the after life (well, Ely).

Believe that one’s gone for storage now and possibly off lease awaiting transfer.156907 has worked 5Z56 to Barrow Hill L.I.P this morning. I presume EMR needed the depot space for the 170s?
It's quite possible that it's going to be scrapped. Rumours on my grapevine are saying that at least 1 unit will be withdrawn.Believe that one’s gone for storage now and possibly off lease awaiting transfer.
Id have thought that would have been 497 - it reportedly went away for a corrosion assessment some time ago and doesn’t appear to have surfaced since. It's quite possible that it's going to be scrapped. Rumours on my grapevine are saying that at least 1 unit will be withdrawn.
That was 498. It went for assessment/repairs at Derby and is now stored at Ely with the other 3 Angel Trains units.Id have thought that would have been 497 - it reportedly went away for a corrosion assessment some time ago and doesn’t appear to have surfaced since.
407 is meant to be a Northern one - perhaps they've given up it given the length of time it is taking to do each unit? It's quite possible that it's going to be scrapped. Rumours on my grapevine are saying that at least 1 unit will be withdrawn.
It is one of the units transferring to Northern, as has been stated several times before. It's quite possible that it's going to be scrapped. Rumours on my grapevine are saying that at least 1 unit will be withdrawn.
Interestingly that unit was involved in two separate collisions - Leeds West Junction in 1993 with (with 47 562) and Crosby Garrett in 1999 (with 60 019). I wonder whether the damage sustained and the subsequent repairs left the unit more vunerable to corrosion issues? That was 498.

If they have given up, it'll be interesting to see what what happens to 917 (417) and if two of the "native" EMR units will transfer instead.407 is meant to be a Northern one - perhaps they've given up it given the length of time it is taking to do each unit?
Oh dear! More senior moments! Thanks for the clarifications.156489156498 collided with 91019 at Holbeck Jn in 1991.

The hand back dates of the Class 156s are no later than what is shown here (ignore that the dates are written the wrong way round, someone hasn't changed the spreadsheet settings from American English to English UK)
