The wooden extensions at Warrington Central are relatively new additions and as far as I know appeared well after conventional DMU operation finished. I did find some paperwork via the RSSB or suchlike a few years ago about them which said they could be used for passengers to alight onto, but not to board from, hence the gates which only swing one way. Train doors could not be closed nor dispatched until all passengers had left the extensions was part of the ruling. The TOCS decided to go one step further and say they couldn't be used at all.
In respect of 185's the rearmost doors are manually locked out of use as follows:
LPY and WAC - two rearmost doorways in the direction of travel
WID, 0715 ex LIV only, - rearmost 3 doorways to be locked out and guard to open and close at the Guard Operating Panel in the middle carriage of the rear unit.
