Electric counties?

Are there any counties at all in which no diesel passenger trains run (including ones that manage to pass through the county without stopping)? I'm thinking the answer is "no"? The through trains to last remaining non-electric lines south of London I think do for those counties. Essex has diesel branches plus the XC airport services. The other mainlines all have diesel services, and electrification isn't widespread enough further north.

The two that come to my mind are Hertfordshire and Kent, but I am not sure exactly where the ECML goes in relation to the Hertfordshire border, I imagine it skirts in and out of it tbh.

The only other potential one is East Sussex? But again that is lack of knowledge of the precise border that makes me suggest it.

Does the Isle of Wight count as a County?

Do 171's work the "Marshlink Line" between Ashford in Kent and Hastings in Sussex? There's also the Uckfield's in E Sussex IIRR.
As regards Hertfordshire, the MML and, i believe ECML both run through the County and so would have HST's, 222's and 180's running through it.

Kent and East Sussex are not as the Marshlink (Hastings-Ashford Intl) line passes thought them, also the Swale Swing Bridge isn't electrified.

Hertfordshire has Voyagers on the London to N-Wales
The ECML is in Herts between Barnet and Hitchin

Hadley Wood-Hitchin(-Royston) is in Hertfordshire

also Harpenden-Elstree &borehamwood on MML is in Hertfordshire

so all local services in Hertfordshire are electric but a large number of long distance MML/ECML services are diesel. (though I think a small section of the Chiltern line goes through Hertfordshire near Rickmansworth?)

Kent will have a very high proportion of electric services (Ashford-Hastings line being the main exception?)

Uckfield is in East Sussex. As is about half of the Ore > Ashford section.

As well as part of the Ashford > Hastings section, Edenbridge is also in Kent.

West Sussex on the other hand looks good to me.

Gatwick Airport is in West Sussex and is served by class 165s from Reading.

On the grounds that 159s may run through but seldom stop there - Surrey :)

East Renfrewshire I think

Are there still Stranraer services which run the "Paisley" route (rather than via Kilmarnock)?

Of course, the use of 156s to cover for dodgy 380s on some Paisley duties may change that too (in the short term only)

Most of the Reading > Gatwick route is in Surrey, so diesels a-plenty in the county.

Also, as well as Gatwick Airport, the northern end of the Uckfield line is in West Sussex, so that's WS out on two counts.

East Renfrewshire isn't really a county surely, just a local authority. Even if it is considered a county, the line out to Barrhead and part of the East Kilbride line are in it.

One train a day runs via Paisley and both Sunday trains. This is Renfrewshire of course. East Renfrewshire has diesel services via Barrhead.

Inverclyde would be a shout I think, although as 4SRKT implies above, they're not historic counties.

Well I have learned something about how far over Hertfordshire comes, that is definitely useful thankyou.

I had ruled West Sussex out because of the Brighton trains but hoped East Sussex at least had a chance. Never mind.

Of counties with almost no electrification is Derbyshire the one with the shortest bit (into Glossop from Greater Manchester)?

Wearside presumably covers some of the ECML to count it out?

Lots of counties have no electrification: Cardiganshire (Fishguard), ross-shire 9most of Far North/Kyle lines), County Tyrone has no lines at all!

Rutland may be a contender.
A very short stretch of the ECML passes through between Cambridgeshire & Lincolnshire (probably about 4 miles maximum)

The Isle of Wight was part of Hampshire until 31st March 1973 and then became a county in its own right with two districts: Medina and South Wight. It is now a unitary county as is Wiltshire.

There is also the Edwalton test track if that counts? Although admittedly i'm a bit fuzzy on the exact location of the Leicestershire/Rutland border.

Western Isles?

Fermanagh and Tyrone, although TBF these along with the Western Isles and whatever the Orkneys and Shetlands are in have no railways at all. Except my mate's 0 gauge garden railway that is.

That is another good one, now independent from Leicestershire. Of course had it still been in Leicestershire then the percentage electrified of the whole county would have been much lower (and maybe have rivalled Derbyshire for lowest percentage given there is some)

Thanks though to everyone who has listed counties without any electrification, but I think we all know they exist. ;)

The Uckfield line runs through Greater London > Surrey > Kent > East Sussex. Hertfordshire must get the diesels out of King's Cross?

No it's not!
