The Uckfield line runs through Greater London > Surrey > Kent > East Sussex. Hertfordshire must get the diesels out of King's Cross?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

No it's not!

No, you're right, it's not.

Is Gatwick Airport actually in West Sussex? Postally it's RH6 which is Horley and therefore Surrey. Postal boundaries don't always line up with county boundaries TBF, but if Gatwick is in WS, it's not by much.

Gatwick is in West Sussex - post codes bare little resemblance to the county, rather are just an indication of where the main sorting office is.. Crawley and East Grinstead have Redhill postcodes, as the RH area is very large:

Moray
Wester Ross
Easter Ross
The Outer Hebrides (no lines)
The Inner Hebrides (Mull Rail is the only line)

I know. I am the world's leading authority on postcodes ;) Or a geek as I am called at work because of it.

Crawley and East Grinstead don't have 'Redhill' postcodes BTW. Only Redhill or RH1 has Redhill postcodes. RH2-RH20 have 'RH' postcodes.

You can add Wales to that, as well as many counties in southwest England (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire, Worcestershire etc.)

You know what I mean! lol. What winds me up is people who think that the telephone code for inner London is 0207!

I'm not sure which winds me up more - that (as someone with an 0203 work number I confuse people regularly) or the shops which still have 01 numbers on their signs.

Theres no such thing as an 0203 or 0207 or 0208 number - they're all 020 numbers. You can have an 020 8xxx xxxx in inner London or an 020 7xxx xxxx in outer London or an 020 3xxx xxxx in either. Some numbers in London don't begin with 020 at all, and some numbers outside London begin with 020.

In fact, Gatwick did used to be in Surrey:

West Sussex on the other hand looks good to me.

Do those diesels still run from Brighton to Salisbury etc? Gatwick's in West Sussex for the Thames Turbos!

That's probably where it got its RH6 postcode from, having been historically associated with Horley rather than Crawley, and hence the reason I thought it might be in Surrey. Although the RH postcode straddles three counties, broadly speaking its post towns don't. RH1-9 are in Surrey, RH10-17 and 19-20 are in West Sussex and RH18 is in East Sussex.

This was the reason for my asking about whether Gatwick is in Surrey or not, in order to attempt to make my assertion about West Sussex count! I'm not sure about the Brighton > Salisburys, but by asking this you've just reminded me that the Ashford > Hastings workings go through to Brighton. Therefore this one service knocks out three counties that would otherwise be very close to being all-electric.

I thought that The Birmingham Cross-city line went to Redditch which is in Worcestershire?

I have a theory that many apparent anomolies in postcodes stem from old railway operations. For example all of Fife has KY postcodes, except Tayport and Newport on Tay which are DD6. The only reason I can think of is that the mail used to come from Dundee on the branch from Wormit, and that this habit stuck even after the line was closed. Eventually this became enshrined in these two towns alone in Fife getting DD postcodes and getting their mail from Dundee for evermore.

Likewise Crianlarich which is FK20, despite the 'towns' on either side being Arrochar which is a G postcode and Dalmally which is PA. Thus these three nearby villages in an incredibly sparsely populated area get their mail from three different mail centres. The only reason I can see for Crianlarich having an FK postcode is that even after the Callander and Oban shut it continued to get its mail from Falkirk (actually like KY now just a pre-sort split for the convenience of the massive Edinburgh centre) even though it would have made much more sense to take it from the Glasgow office.

It does and it is.

Ah - but Brighton is in East Sussex - or if you want its a city and its own authority now! Which then leads me to ask people - is Croydon in Surrey or London?

Is it? I though Brighton was just in West Sussex. I'm not interested in unitary authorities. They are still in their old counties for 'ceremonial' purpose, whatever that may mean. For the purposes of this I'm using 1974 counties, except in cases like Cleveland where they have been completely abolished, unlike the Metropolitan Counties for example, which have no councils, but which are still ceremonial counties'.

Still doesn't work for West Sussex though because of the Gatwick incursion :( Can't even change the rules to the pre-1974 boundaries in order to rule Gatwick out because then there was no such thing as 'West' Sussex and the Uckfield line and Brighton > Rye sections were all in 'Sussex'.

Does the ECML make it over the border into East Yorkshire at any stage?

What about cities without electrified lines? Top 20 cities by population are:

London
Birmingham
Liverpool
Leeds
Sheffield
Bristol
Manchester
Leicester
Coventry
Hull
Bradford
Stoke on Trent
Wolverhampton
Nottingham
Plymouth
Southampton
Reading
Derby
Dudley
Newcastle

Areas without electrified routes in bold, am I right?

Is this just English cities? Pretty sure Glasgow fits in there.

Bristol isn't electrified. Dudley doesn't even have a station. 'Sandwell & Dudley' station is in Sandwell district, in the post town Oldbury.

Is this just English cities? Pretty sure Glasgow fits in there.

And Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

As far as I remember they have 01382 phone numbers etc too, plus get "Grampian" television rather than "Scottish".

Here in South Yorkshire we have "Sheffield" Postcodes extending into Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire yet Doncaster has its own...

You are right about the "logistics" side though; a lot of the west coast of Scotland has a "Paisley" Postcode since the mail will come through Glasgow Airport

Although the DN postcode also covers all of what used to be South Humberside, plus into Lincolnshire proper around Gainsborough, Nottinghamshire (Retford), East Yorkshire (Goole/Howden) and North Yorkshire (Snaith, Hensall).

Shows how important MML electrification would be, given that there are four decent sized cities with no wires (well, if you exclude the trams!)

On the Sheerness Branch (Sittingbourne-Sheerness), when it crosses the Thames onto the Isle of Sheppey, north of Swale station.

You've obviously not seen my location .... :P

The bridge you are on about is called the Kingsferry Bridge. It is a uniqe design of lifting bridge and is one of 4 of its kind in the entire world.

It crosses the River Swale, not the Thames.

How do [electric] trains get onto the Isle of Sheppey? Do they have to get a good run up?

We need to find a way round this kind of problem; the same exists on areas like the swing bridge on the Selby - Hull line...

Although by the time this line is considered for electrification someone'll have cracked cold fusion or teleportation or something, or the whole world'll have been wiped out in a nuclear war or environmental catastrophe, so it won't matter.

OTOH, last time I was in Selby it was so full of inbreds and mutants that it looked a bit like the aftermath of a nuclear war........
