After weighing all the advice (for which she thanks everyone), Mrs O went for the 17:03. Se reported that the Cross was being well handled, with little sign of the chaos one might expect. The train had no hot food because the chef was stuck on an incoming, but, being prewarned, she had stocked up on the station. The announcements on the train were a tad vague - "because of what has happened at Grantham" - and Grantham passengers were a little alarmed, thinking there had been a major incident at their town. But, again, Mrs O could fill them in. They were a little miffed to be told after Peterborough that they were being held in a queue only to have other trains go past on the fast, but operational requirements probably demanded that. Apparently, when they reached Grantham, passengers were told that, to get past the site of the incident, they had had to lower the pantograph, operate on emergency power, and coast past. Any details on that procedure? Arrived in Leeds exactly one hour late (having been stuck behind the inevitable slow train round Wakefield).
Does anyone know the reporting number of the train (the 1Dnn thingy) so she can bung in a compensation claim (though they were not handed out on the train, nor the number announced, which is usually the case)
Again, Mrs O would like to thank everyone for the assistance

Ajax103 posted a link to a video on coasting with the pantograph down a couple of days ago, a quick search will find it. I'm not at a PC so can't do so quickly!

Diesel trains overtook electrics, for example the 1650 GC service departed at 1736 and overtook a couple of 91s including the 1700 and arrived in York a long time before the 1700! I wonder if passengers on the concourse were advised of the much faster journey times on the HSTs and Adelantes?

Does anyone know what happened to 5Z10? NXEA 321 313 was going to Doncaster yesterday for refirbishment, and I was watching it at work hoping it would come through Tottenham Hale, but it went up South Tottenham, Seven Sisters and rejoined the WA at Cheshunt. Reversed at Cambridge. James Welham has a photo on his site
that 5Z10 was cancelled at Peterborough due to a tree on the OHL's at Stoke Jn.
Not been to work to find out yet, did it eventually make it to Doncaster or did it return to Ilford?

As we approached Grantham on the southbound, I was suspicious at the reports of problems because so many trains were passing us going north. However, thinking back, they were all HSTs...

Can someone post a link? I've done a quick and a long search and can't find it!

Here you go, found it on YouTube - a must have to anyone's collection who's interested in railway operations:

It was stabled at Nene Sidings yesterday in Peterborough, don't know if it made it to Doncaster but I presume so as I didn't see it there when I arrived back in Peterborough today about 6pm off one of the 321s services.

Any ideas on what caused disruption this morning on the Northern part of the ECML? Must have been major for the Natex T/Bird from Newcastle to be deployed :(

Not sure about this morning, but there were OHLE problems at Hitchin this evening.
just travelled back from Newcastle.
Went south through Sandy on time at 17:25
then crawled through Hithcin & arrived at Stevenage at 18:12, 35 minutes let.

on Monday, the 07:50 SVG-NCL service broke down at Hitchin & again at Newark (brake problems according to the on train announcements), & it was terminated at Doncaster 60 minutes late so I arrived in newcastle 90 minutes late.

Yes. Two unrelated incidents.
(and I got caught up with both!)
Morning prob was in the Dunbar -
Berwick area, and yes, the replacement busses were all called out and staffed. But as you reghtly say, they weren't used. OHLE problems was the story from NXEC staff. The Newcastle thunderbird rolled back into Newcastle around 11am just behind an 86 running light, and then the delayed and rescheduled services. Delayed services were slowly catching up when a freight got tangled up with OHLE somewhere around Hitchin - Stevenage. So more dealys with staff and stock in the wrong place. Kings Cross was back to timetable by 19:20 -ish.

Reminds us how fragile our timetables are when the infrastructure is so unforgiving of faults.

I passed the 86 LE whilst heading back on a northbound HST set. Kinda nice to know that all was ok by 13.00

Yet another farce on the ECML today.
Can it get any better? Delays of upto 124 mins on journey's into Newcastle.
Everything is totally up the 'swannie'.
Thoughts go out to all those involved and to the family concerned :(

Someone was hit by a train. That isn't Network Rail's or NXEC's fault.
How is it a farce?
What do you expect them to do?

...yeah waiting at ncl for my cancelled train, felt like every other train was being cancelled. do think nxec could handle things better, my train got cancelled and it dissappeared of the departure boards. everyone was really confused, wondering what was going on, with no platform staff to be found - it was aroudn 15 minutes before they actually anounced it was cancelled and that we should just get the next train...

So that's why you're off sick - I saw your new wonderful liveried 180 and had a while at the Cross so wanted to ask you how the driver was and just catch up with you.

Amazing though that both your Operations Director and Managing Director happened to be on that train?

What's a TOLO by the way?

It was mayhem at Newcastle.
The 1810 should be a 91 however this was rather late on the inward trip :(
So we had a HST instead... Then had to wait for the train crew on a delay inbound trip. No-one seemed to know what was happening, I ended up finding a NXEC manager on the platform and he was rather upto speed on the whole lot :)
